Margaret “Ann” Turner Feb. 20, 1927-Nov. 5, 2012


Margaret S. “Ann” Turner, 85 years old, of Port Clinton, passed away peacefully on Nov.5, at the Vineyards on Catawba.

Ann was born February 20, 1927 in Lima, the daughter of Carroll Francis “Mike” and Margaret Graham Sweeney. Ann was a 1945 graduate of Lima Central High School and graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1949. At BGSU, she was a member of the Delta Gamma sorority and a college cheerleader. Ann taught physical education and was the Middies’ girls basketball coach for six years at Middletown High School.
On July 11, 1959, she was united in marriage to David V. Turner in Lima, Ohio. From this union they enjoyed four children. She was one of the last three surviving charter members of Firelands Presbyterian Church on Catawba Island. She was an excellent bridge player and loved basketball as both a spectator and a player. Ann played volleyball in the Port Clinton city league until age 74. She had a personal mission to serve others and to leave this world better than she found it through volunteering and giving of her time, talents and treasures, in spite of her severe hearing deficit. Her volunteer efforts included church choir, scout leader, Sunday school teacher, Salvation Army and distribution of meals on wheels.
She is survived by sons, Michael (Sandy) Turner of Madison, IN; Charles Turner of Las Vegas, NV; daughters, Sue Piacentino of Catawba Island and Sally (Doug) St. Clair of Oak Harbor; grandsons, Sage Turner, Tate Turner and Beau Turner; granddaughters Sebree Turner, Kayla and Kacie Piacentino; brother John G. “Jack” Sweeney of Lima; niece Diane Alexander;and nephew John Sweeney. Ann was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dave, and sister-in-law Marjorie (Pfieffer) Sweeney.
Ann chose to generously donate her body to UTMC in order to improve and save the lives of others. A memorial service to remember this gentle, giving human being will be held at 3 p.m.on Friday, Nov. 9, at Firelands Presbyterian Church, 2626 East Harbor Road, Port Clinton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be designated to support the local heroes of the Catawba Island Volunteer Fire Department, Firelands Presbyterian Church or the Senior Independence Hospice Wish Foundation.
