Dr. Kenneth L. Akins, 81, of Port Clinton, passed away, Thursday, Jan. 30, at Edgewood Manor Nursing Home, Port Clinton, surrounded by his loving family. Ken was born on June 9, 1932 in Akron, the son of Quay and Bernice (Bixler) Akins. On Sept. 19, 1959 in Louisville, OH, he married Naomi Thompson and she survives. Ken had his private practice from 1962 to 1996 and was the staff physician for Davis Besse Nuclear Power Station. He also was the Ottawa County Coroner from 1983 to 2000. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving during the Korean War. Ken enjoyed photography, traveling, computer and music. He was the author of two books related to the history of Ottawa County and of Port Clinton Faith United Methodist Church. Ken was a member of the Oliver H. Perry Masonic Lodge #341 F. & A.M. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church of Port Clinton. Ken will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends.
Survivors include: Loving Wife of 55 years: Naomi Akins; Daughter: Cynthia (Joseph) Thornton; Son: Gregory P. (Michele Solarchick) Akins; Grandchildren: Abby & Rachel Thornton and Quay, Beckett & Rhya Akins; Brothers: Donovan C. (Jean) Akins and James E. (Marney) Akins; Nephew: Thomas (Jennifer) Akins; Niece: Mary Beth (Chris) Colville; Great-Nieces: Caroline, Margaret & Grace Akins. Ken was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.n., Sunday, Feb. 2, in the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 216 Washington St., Port Clinton. Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 3, in Faith United Methodist Church, Port Clinton. Interment will be in Catawba Island Cemetery.
