Oak Harbor girls improve to 2-1 on the season

After opening the season with a loss to Port Clinton last weekend, the Oak Harbor Rockets wanted to respond with a vengeance and they did just that in their 63-30 victory.

In a game that saw Oak Harbor take the lead for good at 2-0 on Makayla Carpenter's steal and layup, the Rockets dominated throughout, controlling the tempo of the game as they slowly built the lead before taking a 34-14 lead into the half.

Andrea Cecil and Maria Boers scored 30 of the Rockets' 34 first-half points with Cecil scoring 18 and Boers finishing with 12 points, nine of which came on three-pointers. In the first half, Cecil was able to break down the Charger defense with her athleticism, scoring on a number of high-percentage shots and feeding her teammates when the defense collapsed on her. Boers, meanwhile, connected on 4-of-9 field goals and was a consistent threat from the perimeter, scoring off a number of nice passes from point guard Makayla Carpenter.

Oak Harbor head coach Tom Kontak, who got his first win as the Rockets' head coach, spoke about his team's play.

“We knew going in that Edison was a top pick (in the conference) and was very athletic,” Kontak said. “Combine that with what we all agreed was a disappointing performance to PC, and we were motivated. To hold Edison to 30 points, that's exciting, they're an athletic group. That was all parts of our game clicking. When they all understand their roles, that combined is pretty tenacious.”

Oak Harbor 61, Huron 33

After taking a 30-21 lead into the half, the Rockets put the game away in the second half by outscoring Huron, 31-12. Boers led the team with 22 points while connecting on five 3-pointers. Cecil finished with 14 points and Gezo chipped in with 13.

Cecil got the team going in the first half with her penetration, scoring eight points as she helped Oak Harbor build its lead. Carpenter was able to break down the defense at times with her dribble penetration which opened things up for Boers, who scored most of her points on perimeter shots. And Gezo was a constant presence down low as she was able to get good inside position and score on several high-percentage shots.

With the win, the Rockets improve to 2-1 overall and 2-1 in the Sandusky Bay Conference. This week, the Rockets travel to Bellevue to face the Lady Red and host Clyde and Woodmore.
