Coast Guard warns of ice-breaking on Tuesday

The Coast Guard is advising residents of southern Lake Erie islands, including Catawba Island, that the commercial tug Ohio is scheduled to break ice from South Bass Island to Catawba Island on Tuesday morning.

This ice-breaking operation does not involve a Coast Guard ice breaker. Nonetheless, the Coast Guard is advising residents and visitors that any ice in the area may be particularly unstable and dangerous.

Wreaths Across America brings warmth to Catawba Island Cemetery

Even though the temperature was cold, warm hearts gathered in Catawba Island Cemetery to thank veterans and give them a Christmas gift; a beautiful Christmas wreath. Wreaths Across America provides this service for roughly 900 cemeteries around the United States.

Many people gathered for the ceremony despite the weather conditions. The ceremony was opened by Father John Missler of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church giving a blessing and prayer. Next organizers Reggie Langford and Diane Belden said a few words.

Wreaths Across America arrives in Catawba

The Wreaths Across America truck arrived in Catawba early Tuesday morning to prepare for the wreath laying event on Saturday. The public is invited to join in honoring fallen veterans for Christmas in a Wreaths Across America ceremony being held at Catawba Island Cemetery Dec. 14 at 11 a.m.
