Well, we can now officially say goodbye to summer and our fantastic Indian summer and launch the holiday season in Ottawa County. One of our favorite holiday traditions here at The
We had 182 correct entries in our Find Wylie contest last week. Carol Even, of Catawba, found Wylie in the ad for Packer Creek Pottery in last week’s Beacon. She wins a $20 gift card from Friendship Food Stores. We’ll hide Wylie again this week. If you find him, drop us a note at our office … or click on the Find Wylie icon online at www.thebeacon.net. Wendy Holder, of Port Clinton, was selected from 64 entries and won a $20 Friendship Food Stores Gas Card just by clicking on the “Win it on the Web” icon, also on our Web site. Barne’s Nursery on Catawba donated a $100 live pine tree to help decorate the Humane Society of Ottawa County on Sand Road. Volunteers were out in force Monday afternoon to help decorate the shelter. The Miss Vacationland Scholarship Pageant has returned, thanks in large measure to the hard work of former Miss America (1963) Jackie Mayer and Brenda Bou-Sliman. The event will officially take place this Saturday, Nov. 28 at Playmakers Civic Theatre starting at 7:30 p.m. The reigning Miss Ohio will be on hand and will perform. This pageant is officially affiliated with the Miss America Pageant, and is a qualifier for the Miss Ohio Pageant. Tickets are available at the door. For information, call Brenda at 419-960-1681. The folks who volunteer to wrap Christmas presents the past few holidays will be doing again this year out in Marblehead from Dec. 3-24. The Gift Wrap Center is located at 5681 E. Harbor Road next to the Marblehead Chamber of Commerce office. The hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Donations for ARC of Ohio — an advocacy agency for people with disabilities and their families — will be accepted. To donate boxes, ribbons, bows or tape or for information, call Cathy at 419-260-3949. The public is invited to the annual Holiday Benefit Brunch at the Nor’Easter Club on Sunday, Dec. 6. The tradition began back in the ’80s by the late Nate Buchantz when he managed Mon Ami. Nate carried on the tradition after he opened Nate’s Restaurant in the ’90s. Port Clinton Yacht Club officially said farewell to Commodore Doug Young at last Saturday’s Commodore’s Ball. The ballroom was decorated with the Commodore’s own sails (he is an avid sailboarder and multi-hull sailor) and nautical flags that spelled out the message “Bye Doug.” The PCHS swim teams will hold a fundraiser to buy two touch pads for the pool. They are selling Cameo Pizza Cards for $10. For information, contact PC Swimming President Susan Scott at 419-262-4467. The Sunday all-you-can-eat brunches at the Port Clinton Elks Lodge are still going on from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is just $9 for adults and $6 for youngsters. Kids under 6 eat free!
