I received a phone call last week from Vietnam era veteran Ted Petersen of Port Clinton. He informed me that there was one more Port Clinton name that was not listed who is on the Moving Wall that is the Vietnam Memorial. His name is Lance Kohanke, who would have graduated from PC in 1965 but moved away a year before graduation when his family was forced to transfer following the closing of the Erie Army Depot. His sister Debbie was in my graduating class, but moved away after her freshman year also. 

Tonight is the special Wine Tasting Kickoff Party for this weekend’s Catawba/Marblehead Parade of Homes. It will be held at Mon Ami tonight starting at 5:30 p.m. The entire event is a fundraiser for the Salvation Army’s Ottawa County service unit. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at The Beacon or at Salvation Army in the Sutton Center, or just buy them at the door. The Parade itself will be this Saturday and Sunday. We have spent over $10,000 to advertise the event from Columbus to Cleveland to Toledo. The dream of owning a “Place at the Lake” can become a reality and the friendly participants will be happy to show you how!

Congratulations to Tina Burris who was president of Port Clinton Kiwanis in 2011-2012. She received special recognition at last week’s Kiwanis meeting since the local club received “Distinguished Club” status with Kiwanis International. Tina in turn presented five Distinguished Club pins to members she felt were instrumental in helping the club achieve the honor. They went to Ron Mainous, Julie Rosiar, Bill Sharp, Roger Akins and Carl Koebel.

Jeremy Miller, recently ordained Priest of the Toledo Diocese, will be celebrating his first Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marblehead this Sunday at 2 p.m. Jeremy is the son of Ron and Deb Miller.

Greg Fox has agreed to direct a Community Choir for a Patriotic Concert on Thursday, 4th of July, at Trinity United Methodist Church on Adams Street in Port Clinton. The concert will be at 8 p.m. The choir itself is open to all who love to sing and love the USA. The 7th Annual Magruder Hospital Auxiliary Golf Classic “Golfing for the Goal” will be held on Monday, July 15, at Catawba Island Club’s spectacular links. The event is a 4-person scramble with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Lunch will be served at the course from 11:30 to 12:45. Dinner and awards will be held following golf that day. The fee is just $130 per person for the 4-person scramble, which includes 2 drink tickets. Magruder is using the funds raised at the golf outing this year to help fund the current renovations in 1-South. This area mainly serves cancer patients, creating a better overall environment for them to receive care and for family members who wait during extended treatment times. Port Clinton High School is hosting the 2013 Port Clinton Open Tennis Tournament on June 29 and 30. Cost of the Tournament is $15 per player, plus one can of tennis balls for one event or $25 per player for two events plus one can of tennis balls. There is a 2-match guarantee. Community Market will be grilling food, Underwood’s Grill will serve ice cream and Newman’s Kettle Corn will be there popping their delicious corn. Proceeds of this event will go to several non-profits including Salvation Army and Ruth Ann’s House.

The Port Clinton Knights of Columbus will continue their Summer Fish Fry this Friday, June 14, at the Denny Bergeman Memorial K of C Hall, 109 E Perry Street. The fish fries are held the second Friday of every month during the summer from 5 to 7:30 p.m. They have your favorite Lake Erie Perch, Shrimp and ALL YOU CAN EAT Pollock Dinners. They also serve French fries, baked potato, Pierogi, coleslaw, mac & cheese, roll and all the fixings. Sandwich platters and desserts are also available. 

The Humane Society of Ottawa County hopes you’ll join them to help the animals this Saturday, June 15, inside the fort at Fort Firelands Family Fun Center located at the junction of State Routes 163 and 269. The festivities get underway at 3 p.m. with the Ottawa County Bluegrass Band providing the music. There will be children and adult games for all to enjoy, 50/50 raffles, a Chinese Auction, brats and hot dogs. What’s more? Admission is FREE! This will be a family and pet friendly event. Adoptable pets from the shelter will also be there. 100% of the proceeds benefit the animals at the local shelter.

The Lake Erie Islands Browns Backers will hold their 10th Annual Rib Burn Off this Saturday, June 15, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Adventure Bay and the Sand Bar on Put-in-Bay. Area restaurants will be competing for the best ribs on the Island. Cleveland Browns players John Hughes and Ishmaa’ily Kitchen will be will be there signing autographs. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children 6-10 and free for youngsters 6 and under. Admission includes being able to meet the players and a chance to bid on the Cleveland Brown silent auction items. Ribs, side dishes and beverages are sold separately. The Ottawa County Genealogical Society will hold its monthly June meeting this Tuesday, June 18, at 7 p.m. at Ida Rupp Public Library, 310 Madison Street in Port Clinton. Marj Waterhouse, certified genealogist and author from Toledo, will present the program “Records for Those Who Worked on the WPA”. All members and guests are invited. 

Today, Thursday, June 13, will be the very special Open House and Ribbon Cutting at the Lake Erie Shores and Islands Regional Welcome Center on SR 53 (770 SE Catawba Rd.) celebrating the 10th year anniversary of the facility. Maybe it has something to do with the weather, but lately one of the most common questions by new clients is how to protect major assets from being liquidated to cover nursing home expense. Many years ago, I was advised by the State of Ohio that it was malpractice not to advise clients on how to protect assets LEGALLY. It is not my job to pass moral judgment but to give the facts and apply the law. Medicaid is a State and Federal plan to provide funds to pay for nursing home and related expense. There are strict rules to determine who may qualify.
