Shower survivor with birthday wishes
Joe Hrupcho, the last surviving member of Tank Company C, which was captured and virtually wiped out in the fall of Bataan, April 1942, by the Japanese, has made it to another birthday. Joe will be 96 on March 22. We as a community should shower him with birthday cards. Let’s get it done! Joe’s address is 13180 Dorman Road, Apartment B105, Pineville, N.C., 28134. Happy Birthday Joe!

Best of luck in tournament play
Let there be no doubt! The Port Clinton Redskins basketball team finished aperfect regular season Saturday with an impressive 62-37 win over Edison. Congratulations to Troy Diels and his staff along with the players. I have been covering PCHS basketball since my high school days as a sports writer for the Compass, and never has this community experienced anything like this. I have seen lots of great teams and great players over the years, but this one may be the best ever! Best of luck to them in the tournament that starts this week!

Warm welcome winter visitors
If you think there were and are a lot of cars in the local hotel parking lots, you are absolutely correct! Roughly 120 bowlers are participating in the State Elks Bowling Tournament each weekend through March at Harbor Lanes. Also, a large number of nuclear engineers have invaded, as they do every two years, for the Davis Besse refueling process that also lasts through March. Finally, there has been a lot of shooting activity at Camp Perry involving Ohio’s ROTC units. So, welcome to one and all!

John Waite — you will be missed
Dr. John Waite lost his long battle with pancreatic cancer last week, although he stayed with us a lot longer than some thought possible. He did make it to his own benefit dinner and party a couple of weeks back at Port Clinton Yacht Club. Some time ago, his picture graced our front page when he capsized his Interlake sailboat and was caught on camera being towed in, stern first, with the front half of his boat submerged. There was John, standing regally at the stern, his face set like flint looking forward. At his funeral service on Saturday, there were lots more great stories about John’s many adventures and misadventures. I will miss him. He is sailing solo now, in fair winds and calm seas.

City shows support despite snowy weather
Once again, in spite of last Friday’s horrible weather, Ron and Debbie Miller along with their volunteer crew, managed to raise more than $7,500 for the family of Simon Mercurio. They had a big turnout at the spaghetti dinner at Port Clinton High School before the PC-St. Mary’s game, sold a bunch of tickets and actually had a decent turnout for the First Friday Bash at Mango Mamas. Once again, our community steps up and shows us all that we are still made of the RIGHT STUFF!
