Good news for the folks who enjoyed eating at The Garden! J. and Brenda Bou-Sliman recently signed on to manage The Islander Grille on Sand Road.
We had 138 correct entries in our Find Wylie contest last week. Duane Frankurt, of Fostoria, found Wylie in the Slater’s ad on page 8A of last week’s Beacon. She wins a pair of $10 gift certificates to Cleats. We’ll hide Wylie again this week. If you find him, drop a note at our office … or click on the Find Wylie icon online at www.thebeacon.net. Mike Freeh, of Fremont, won a $20 Friendship Food Stores Gas Card just by clicking on the “Win it on the Web” icon, also on our Web site.
The Port Clinton Firefighters Association hosts its annual Feather Party at 6 p.m. Saturday at the fire station on State Road. Tickets are a $1 donation, or 6 for $5 and the winner could win $300!
Nancy Stitak, wife of PCHS Orchestra Director Brian Stitak, was recently diagnosed with cancer. The family had to move back to Marion to be close to family. This Sunday, there will be a special musical benefit for the family from 1 to 5 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. It will be a “family friendly” performance by local talented musicians. There will be a bake sale, 50/50 drawing and a silent auction.
The Oak House at 333 Buckeye Blvd. in Port Clinton is holding its annual gift bazaar from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13. Members will have a great selection of holiday gifts such as herbal products, headache pillows, wreaths and other hand-crafted items.
Speaking of PCHS, English teacher Ty Roth is having two books published by Random House. One is due out in 2011 and the other in 2012.
The Ottawa County Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 in the lounge of St. John Lutheran Church in Port Clinton. The lounge is in the basement of the Parish Hall. Henry Timmans, of Norwalk, a professional genealogist will give a talk on “finding maiden names.”
The Bay Area Divers’ annual Shipwreck and Scuba Banquet will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21 at Sawmill Creek Resort in Huron. There will be workshops open to the public featuring recent Lake Erie shipwreck discoveries, taking place starting at 8:30 a.m. The banquet will begin at 6:30 p.m. Advance ticket sales only can be purchased by calling Sandra Heschel at 419-732-1728. There will be no tickets sold at the door.
Ed Fitzgerald of Mr. Ed’s will be hosting a “Kids for Christmas” benefit event all day Saturday, Nov. 21, the day of the Ohio State-Michigan game. Ed and his folks plan on adopting up to seven families to assist this coming holiday season. Featured fare will be 38 gallons of hobo stew. The doors open at 10 a.m. that day, and Mike “Mad Dog” Adams will provide the entertainment after the game. To apply for adoption, call Ed at 419-732-2645. All funds raised will stay in Ottawa County.
