I received a note from old friend and classmate Dick Mullins, who provided us with the information for our Memorial Day story on Bill Matthews, the first local resident who was killed in action in Vietnam. Now we learn that our story was read by another former local, Dan Rupp, who lives in southern Indiana. Rupp was inspired to do a wood carving of the portrait of Bill Matthews. He made one for both of Bill’s brothers and donated one to the VFW for the William Matthews Jr. Pavilion.
We had 109 correct entries in our Find Wylie contest last week. Our winner is Valerie Pines of Wellington, Ohio, who correctly found Wylie in the NOMS ad on page 5A last week. Valerie wins a $20 gift card from Friendship Convenient Stores. We’ll hide Wylie again this week. If you find him, drop us a note at our office or click on the Find Wylie icon online at www.thebeacon.net. Many of us remember the amazing Lindsay Kaufman, who was an educator extraordinaire in Port Clinton. I got a note this week from Cathy Greene that Lindsay now lives in the Dominican Republic and works for a mission there. She is now directly involved with the relief effort in Haiti leading a team of doctors and paramedics in treating the earthquake victims. If anyone wants to donate to their efforts, they can go to www.dominicancrossroads.com. Tom Ganley, a Cleveland auto dealer and candidate for the U.S. Senate will be the speaker for the Fourth Thursday Republican Lunch Bunch on Jan. 28 at the Port Clinton Elks Lodge. All are welcome and the cost of the noon lunch is $10. Also, Ohio Republican Gubernatorial candidate John Kasich will be the featured speaker at the Ottawa, Sandusky and Seneca Lincoln Day Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18. Tickets are $35 and available by calling 419-898-6874 or 419-360-6874. Congratulations to the following honor roll students at THE Ohio State University: Jamie Que, Jessica Sheppard, Lindsay Tisza and Alexandria Underwood, all of Port Clinton. Last week we told you about John Waite being honored with the Oliver True Award at Port Clinton Yacht Club. Unfortunately, his cancer has worsened and treatments have become a real financial burden on John’s family. His friends have organized a Spaghetti Dinner Benefit from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at PCYC. Chef Dick Renn will be preparing the spaghetti featuring his original sauce. The public is invited. Cost for the meal is $12. There will also be a silent auction during dinner followed by a little rock ’n’ roll with the Travelin’ Lounge Lizards at 8 p.m. Services this Sunday at Peace Lutheran in Port Clinton will be a little out of the ordinary. Pastor Mike Wiechers will be welcoming “To the Glory,” a puppet ministry out of Bellevue. This company of professional puppeteers will be presenting four vignettes especially written for the youth of the congregation. A free-will offering will be accepted. Following 9 a.m. services, the puppeteers will be staying on for Sunday School. The high school ELMS youth group will be preparing and serving a special “Flapjacks with Friends” breakfast for the youngsters and their new friends.
