Relay for Life of Ottawa County June 20-21

Cancer has touched everyone’s lives in some way or another being it personal, a family or a friend. We have seen first-hand how something so terrible can bring so many people together with love and compassion. The American Cancer Society benefits from the Relay for Life events that are held all over the country. The event is a place where survivors can come together, family members can heal together and family and friends can donate to help another cancer patient’s journey easier.

The Ottawa County Relay for Life will take place June 20-21 at the Oak Harbor High School starting at 6 p.m. Friday. The event will go to 12 p.m., noon, on Saturday. This year’s theme for the relay is Stories of Hope. As of Tuesday, 19 teams and 117 participants have already raised $43,500.90.

The family friendly event will include a reception for all cancer survivors, a luminaria ceremony at 10 p.m., games and activities for children, a DJ and bands, food, contests, raffles and prizes.

All are welcome to attend the event. To donate visit relayforlife.org/ottawaco with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

Oak Harbor's Athena Eli poses with her 3 medals earned at the Division II State Track Meet.

One of the most memorable seasons in Oak Harbor sports history ended in fantastic fashion with three relay teams placing at the Division II State Track & Field Meet on Saturday at Jesse Owens Stadium at The Ohio State University.

The 4x400, 4x100 & 4x200 meter relays finished fourth, sixth and eighth, respectively. The 4x400 came in at 3 minutes, 58.67 seconds, clinching the fourth spot when Allie Jett rallied to pass Autumn Young of Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy just before the finish line. Athena Eli led things off before passing the baton to Cydney St. Clair, who had the team in first place when she handed it off to Karis DeWalt.

The 4x100, which consisted of Jett, Rebekah Rayburn, St. Clair and Eli, finished in 49.81, just 0.11 short of the school record, and the 4x200 team of Jett, Rayburn, DeWalt and Eli came in at 1:44.46. (The school record for the 4x200 was broken at the regional meet in 1:44.28.)
