Don’t let blood sucking vampire black flies ruin your fun

The walleye fishing on Lake Erie’s Western Basin is still going strong with reports of people still catching easy limits on the west side of the islands. Nothing has really changed in how they are catching them, so if you want to drift cast by tempting them with “Weapons”, troll for them using spoons behind Jet Divers and Dipsies, crawler harnesses behind inline weights, or even crankbaits; everything is still working.

Fishing with the Women in Conservation

The Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District, in cooperation with Tibbels Marina, is offering a special opportunity for women to take a chartered fishing trip out of Lakeside Marblehead. The trip will be held on Wednesday, July 16, from 5-9 p.m.

Fishing poles and bait will be provided, as well as a boxed diner for the 4 hour fishing trip.  A fishing license will be required for the trip and are available for purchase at Tibbels Marina or at many other locations in the county.  A one day fishing license costs $11 and a resident fishing license is $19 (if you are 66 or older than the cost is $10).

The cost to attend the Fishing Trip for Women in Conservation is $35.  To reserve your spot for this evening of fun, fishing, and friends, please call 419-898-1595.

Catching Walleye during a Mayfly Hatch

Frank Smith

Anyone who lives near Lake Erie is familiar with the massive Mayfly hatches we endure each spring around this time. In the “nymph” stage, they can live under water for several years. As they mature, the metamorphoses of the nymph into a mature Mayfly happens over several stages of molts, and when they reach the surface of the lake, or river, they are winged little beauties that will live for only one day.  Their only purpose at this stage is to mate and reproduce. It’s kind of sad when you think about it really, they finally free themselves of the water, and all that would gladly eat them, only to be able to soar like an eagle for one day, and then they die.
