United Way leads discussion on “The Kindness of Strangers”

On March 5 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at Ida Rupp Public Library in Port Clinton, United Way in Ottawa County is hosting a book discussion on “The Kindness of Strangers” by Marc Freedman. The library ordered 20 copies of the book especially for the book discussion and they are encouraging the public to read the book and participate in the discussion.

“We want to execute the best practices for mentoring,” said Chris Galvin, Area Director of the United Way in Ottawa County. “We don’t want to just be mentors; we want to be life navigators.”

According to factfinder2.census.gov, in Ottawa County 12.7% of households are single female families. According to countyhealthrankings.org, 28% of the children in Ottawa County live in single parent homes and 17% of all children in the county live in poverty.

“There are children in our community who need the guidance of caring and concerned adults,” said Galvin. “We hope to get discussion going on how to best help prevent and cope with these situations.”

For more information on this event call the Ida Rupp Public Library at 419-732-3212 or the United Way at 419-734-6645.

“An aggressive goal was set for 2013 because it was needed to help individuals and families be successful in our community,” said Chip Carstensen, president of Block Communications, Inc. and 2013 United Way of Greater Toledo campaign chair. “Turning our backs on a goal that hasn’t been met means turning our backs on the undeserved in our community.”
