Ottawa County educational leaders find career opportunities in service and tourism

On Thursday, May 15, representatives from local school districts, Joint Vocational Schools, and Terra Community College joined with the Ottawa County Improvement Corporation (OCIC) and United Way in Ottawa County for a second bus tour focusing on local career opportunities in the service and tourism sector.

The program was held in follow-up to a December 2013 Manufacturing Bus Tour, giving school leadership and guidance counselors a first-hand look into the vast service and tourism career opportunities in the area. The program was sponsored by the Catawba Island Club, Magruder Hospital, OCIC, and United Way in Ottawa County.

Similar to the December manufacturing tour, participants were able to visit and get an in-depth look at the skills necessary to work in Ottawa County’s service and tourism sector, a sector that is abundant and unique to the community. “With the recent opening of the Hospitality Management Program at Terra Community College, Ottawa County’s Marine Skills Program, and the various healthcare certification and degree programs in our area, it is evident that the continuing education opportunities are here to support our service and tourism industries,” said OCIC Director, Jamie Beier Grant.

Thank you, Volleyball Challenge

The 4th Annual Volleyball Challenge held on April 29th was a huge success! Proceeds from the event benefitted the United Way of Ottawa County. The four main agencies participating in the event were the Ottawa County Board of Developmental Disabilities (OCBDD), OCTA, RVI and Ottawa Residential Services (ORSI). The team of RVI and ORSI won the challenge for the third straight year in a row. The team playing against them was from OCBDD and OCTA.

Everyone had a roaring good time as the Honorable Judge Kathleen Giesler and Commissioner Jim Sass entertained the crowd as Masters of Ceremony. Mr. Sass even donned a very unique hat complete with horns and fur. Donna Drusbacky put her amazing skills to use as the referee for the evening. Brenda Fastinger operated the scoreboard while Amy Cantu, Bri Combs and Kim Strong-Todd managed the concessions, bake sale, silent auction and 50/50 sales. Sharon Virtue greeted the wonderful patrons as she sold tickets at the door. Diane Shupp shared her photographic talents while capturing special moments from the event.
