Get ready to rock at Gem Beach

Gem Beach Rocks V is fast approaching. Gather with friends from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, on the shores of Lake Erie at Gem Beach on Catawba Island to enjoy a day filled with music, food and cold beverages.    
Co-chairmen are John Schaffner and Greg Peiffer, both talented print and radio broadcasters for more than 30 years.
The headliner band is Pumpin Ethyl who will perform along with The Roadhouse Band from Cleveland, one of the hottest bands for all the Bike Rallies; Ronnie Howard with Cruisin;’ and the old guys that still rock, The Lounge Lizards. The event will be jam packed with classic rock ’n’ roll music all day.

Big plans in little Marblehead

The historic village of Marblehead is bringing back “Olde Fashioned Days” on Saturday, June 16 — a villagewide celebration of Marblehead’s old world heritage sponsored by local merchants.
Activities starting at 10 a.m. are along Main Street and include a vintage-antique car show and an Olde Fashioned Street Fair hosted by the village's unique shops. Top-notch guest artists and crafters will be demonstrating and selling their creations in front of many of the shops.
The “Recycled” Barbershop Quartet, with more than 50 years of combined experience, will perform from 12:30 to 6 p.m. in various locations along Main Street, starting at the Village Clipper barbershop. Also performing will be an orchestra comprised of faculty and students from the Terra College of Music playing hits of the ’20s through the ’40s.
Local restaurants, ranging from Cuban cooking to down-home meals, will be providing specials and other vendors will offer festival foods along Main Street.

Free summer programs at Magee Marsh Wildlife Area

Magee Marsh Wildlife Area is offering a variety of nature programs throughout the summer. All programs are offered free of charge and while organizers would like who is coming, no advanced registration is needed.
• Night Hike — meets at the bird center at 9 p.m. Saturday, June 2
• Parents of preschoolers will want to mark the following Fridays on their calendars:  June 8 and 22, July 13 and 27 and Aug. 3 and 24. Special activities from “Growing Up Wild” will be held at the Bird Center from 10 to 10:45 a.m.  Each session will include going outside.
• Kids like to fish? Bring them out to the pond at the Bird Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 16, for a Kids Fishing Day. Bring a chair; poles and bait will be provided. The marsh will have some folks available to show you how it’s done. You may keep the fish you catch or return them to the pond. Also on June 16 will be the monthly Hike the Dikes walk. Meet at the Bird Center at 9 a.m. to explore the summer residents of the marsh. Attend three Hike the Dikes walks to earn a hickory walking stick.
