Beacon Bits - June 25, 2009
I’m writing on my lunch break on Thursday, June 25, and it is another wonderful day…More storms are predicted for later – but there’s nothing in the sky to indicate inclement weather now.  As I just drove around town doing some errands many people were out walking, gardening or just seemingly enjoying the outdoors.  There’s no better weather anywhere than a fragrant, breezy, green late spring day in the Lake Erie Vacationland. There are oodles of summer activities scheduled in our area.  In Elmore there will be a huge bicycling event before you read this paper - on June 21 and 22.  The Elmore Historical Society is planning food service and it appears that the entire village is getting involved.  Then the Portage River Festival is on the weekend of June 27 and 28, again in the village of Elmore, and I want to help at the Elmore Depot with that, too.  I’m not sure how many years I’ve done that now, but it’s fun.  And it’s a good place to see local people helping out with the fundraising for the Society and many other organizations and churches.  I believe there is an all-village garage sale scheduled for that weekend, too.

Another fun thing to see – the brig Niagara is slated to be at Put-In-Bay June 26 – 29.  I’m not sure of the times but the Put-In-Bay Chamber of Commerce or the county visitors bureau could provide that information.

Here is a personal favorite and I gladly recommend it as an interesting and worthwhile thing to do.  The ladies (with some fellows helping) at First United Church of Christ at the corner of James and Prairie Streets, Marblehead, will host their annual Rummage Sale this Friday and Saturday, June 26 and 27.  Most of the sales items are in the church basement (there’s an elevator) but some of the bigger items (appliances, for example) are in the sanctuary level.  Times each day are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There’s more, also, as the ladies sell sandwiches, beverages and have a bake sale.  This year there will even be some elderberry pies --- and those are hard to find.

The church members have been working on this sale since Christmas and have more wares to sell than ever before.  Proceeds are used to keep the church in good shape but also go for Mission Work and other projects of the world-wide church.

If you wait to go until afternoon on Saturday, you can buy anything that’s left for $1 a bag.  So if you’re furnishing a cottage or just wanting to find a bargain, this is the weekend, and the place to do it.  Barb Bouska at 419-734-9417 can answer any questions about the event.

Sunscreen (liberal applications of it) is recommended for anyone who will be spending time with skin exposed to the sun.  Studies have shown that there is a link between sunburns and an increased risk of melanoma (skin cancer).  Modern sunscreens are effective in protecting people from the sun’s rays.  (This information is from an article in “The Well Workplace” health newsletter.  Some tips from the article and elsewhere: Use a lot of sunscreen (about an ounce) and apply to all exposed areas. Rub it in “completely”. Don’t forget scalp, neck and even your ears. Re-apply after two hours or after swimming or perspiring. If your supply of sunscreen is old (more than three years) replace it.  It may no longer be effective. If your lips are sensitive, use lip balm with at least 15 SPF (“Sun Protective Factor”).

So far I’ve not seen too many May Flies, also know as June Bugs.  This newspaper won’t be out for a week so perhaps by the time you read this, more of the little “critters” will be around.  I have noticed that some of the nighttime lights have been turned out in Port Clinton.  At least it doesn’t give the bugs a target to aim for when the city is kept somewhat dark.

I’ve been out to Lakeside a couple of times in the last two weeks.  It was really busy out there as first the West Ohio, then the East Ohio, Conferences of the United Methodist Church were in session.  Both times I visited people staying there as part of their vacation.  It was a fun place to be and there was lots going on.

My vegetable garden is planted and most of the flowers (annuals) are in the ground.  I’m hoping for some time this weekend to get things completed.  One of the prettiest lawns I’ve seen this year is at the home of Sue and Horst Herzog where evergreen and deciduous landscaping elements combine with both annual and perennial flowers to make a nice display.  There is even a “miniature” garden – with some small plants – an unusual addition and very attractive when surrounded by the larger plants.

And now, writing early on Thursday evening, I’m in the Fountain Inn at Lakeside and waiting for a workshop to begin.  I’m the first one here so I had a sandwich supper at Abigail’s Tea Room (which is much different this year) and decided I’d continue writing and really beat the Monday night/Tuesday morning deadline.

The women members of the Put-In-Bay Yacht Club Auxiliary celebrated 60 years as an organization this past week with a luncheon topped off with a huge birthday cake.  This was served by past commodores of the Yacht Club.  These fellows also sang some impromptu old tunes as entertainment for the ladies.

Rose Kahler (of Tiffin), a summer resident of the island, invited ten guests from her school days at Elmore to join her for the birthday event.  Most of her guests then stayed the night at her East Point Cottage to catch up on news and also went out to dinner together to cap off the fun day.

The robins who built the nest in the boxwood bush in back of my house are now a family.  I have seen at least three babies who have hatched and who sometimes stretch their scrawny necks out waiting for food from the parents.  It’s been a neat thing to watch but I’ll be glad when they have fledged so that I can get rid of the nest. These birds are a little too close to the back deck.

This week I received the Sandusky State Theatre brochure for the 2009-2010 season.  The theatre has a “flex plan” which offers a 15-30 percent discount for 3, 4, or 5 shows.  I marked three that I’d like to see:  “Cabaret”, “Church Basement Ladies”, and “The Sound of Music Concert”.  But there are many others, including a performance by the “Firelands Symphony Orchestra” and “Menopause The Musical”.  There are Halloween presentations, Christmas season productions and much more.

Of special interest to local residents is that Beau Hamann of Third Street, Port Clinton, will play the lead in “Grease.”  Beau is a music major and will play Danny Zuko in this ever-popular musical production that was a Broadway hit and a smash motion picture starring John Travolta in 1978.  This will be a presentation of Terra Community College.  Call toll free 1-877-626-1950 for box office information for this or any other show.

Marblehead Lighthouse Historical Society will host a “Nature and Nautical” sale on July 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 3 p.m.  This will be an outdoor sale near the museum in the Lighthouse State Park at the tip of the peninsula.  Then on August 8 the Society will host a chicken barbecue dinner from 11-3.  The public is invited and proceeds will go to the building fund for the Lifesaving Station/Education Center.

Both the present museum and the Lighthouse are open to visitors daily, on  Monday – Friday from 1-5, Sunday 5-7 p.m. and on the second Saturday of the months July – October from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.  If you need more information call Mary Hartman at 419-798-4877.

Melissa Manchester (July 11) and Debby Boone (August 8) are scheduled to perform at Hoover Auditorium at Lakeside.  The 60th anniversary of the Barbershop Quartet Festival is on September 5.  There’s a lot more to do and see in the summer at Lakeside.  Enjoy!

Writing very early in the morning on Tuesday, June 23, 2009…  I drove home late last night from Elmore and the “long day” evening skies were beautiful.  It was nearly ten o’clock and the skies in the west still had light as I drove along.  Right now, as we are in the season of the longest days of the year, I love the extended evenings, don’t you?  They are great.
