Tell Tales - July 2, 2009
The Celebration of Life was held last Saturday at Lakeview Park in Port Clinton. One of the participants in the moving annual Survivor’s Walk was the smiling Taylor Wilhite who made the trek in a wheelchair. It was another beautiful event.

We had 130 entries in our Find Wylie contest last week. Our winner is Lee Cuevas of PC who found Wylie hiding in the Ritzki’s Grill ad on page 12A. Lee wins a $20 gift certificate to Kokomo Bay. Our “Win it on the Web” Contest winner is Ken Benton chosen from 70 entries. Ken wins a $20 gift card from Friendship Food Stores. Wylie will try to hide again this week and when you find him, fill out the Find Wylie Ad (on page 10A) and drop it at our office in the Beacon Place Shopping Center, next to Goodwill. Or, you can click on the Find Wylie icon on our website homepage,  www.thebeacon.net. Also, click on the “Win it on the Web” icon to register for a free gas card.
We had a couple stop in to our office this week that frequent East Harbor. They wondered why the shower and restroom facility at the beach there had been closed. I checked with Beth Ruth of ODNR and got the answer. The shower house at East Harbor State Park beach has developed structural issues. It is closed and will be torn down. Restrooms and shower houses at the campgrounds remain open for campers and other facilities are available long the beaches.

Many thanks go out to event planner Kim Godfrey (Always Genuine Events) and her committee for planning a very successful Catawba/Marblehead Parade of Homes on June 20 and 21. We held our wrap up meeting on Monday and all of the participants reported the two-day event with lots of traffic. Over $3,000 was raised for the Humane Society during the Howl at the Moon Party on Thursday, June 18.

The Great Lakes Chapter of the Matthews Boat Owners Association will host its annual “Float-In” of classic yachts July 21-23 at The Crew’s Nest in Put-in-Bay. They want to welcome former Matthews Boat Company employees, who made these classics in Port Clinton from 1908 to 1974. All former employees will receive a free ride to The Bay aboard the Miller Ferry on Wednesday, July 22. For more information, call Bob Reynolds at 419-732-7858 or Laurie Schultz at 419-732-1353.

The Humane Society of Ottawa County will be holding a special Chicken & Ribs fundraiser this Sunday, July 5 at Community Markets in Port Clinton from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. They will also feature a Bake Sale at the event as well.

Lots of Music events happening this weekend. On Friday, the 6-7-8-OH Band will be playing at Mango Mamma’s from 8 to midnight to raise money to help the PCHS Cheerleaders attend camp. Tickets are $10 to get in. Also Friday night, my personal favorite local band…The Travelin’ Lounge Lizards will be at Mon Ami from 9-1. The Port Clinton Community Band’s holiday concert will be at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 4 at the gazebo in Adams Street Park. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy some good old-time patriotic music before the fireworks show. Finally, on Sunday July 5, Jess Riley and Associates will once again grace the stage at the Log Cabin in Oak Harbor at 6:30 p.m. They play some pretty nice bluegrass music.

Port Clinton Seniors (real seniors, not high school) will be selling October 24 OSU-Minnesota football raffle tickets during the July 4 Old Fashion Ice Cream Social from 3:30 – 5:30 on the lawn of Trinity Methodist Church, across from the gazebo concert on Adams Street. Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. The drawing will be held on September 14 at Senior Day at Put-in-Bay.

Port Clinton residents can purchase a “once and for all” parking pass to be used at the city parking lot on the Portage River for just $10. This makes for easier access to the Riverfront Live concerts held there on Friday and Saturday nights.

Mark July 12 down on your calendar for the Annual Arts and Crafts show sponsored by the Port Clinton Women’s Club and the Kiwanis Barbecue at the Shelter House at Lakeview Park. Kiwanis will be serving their famous BBQ Beef, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, cole slaw, chips and cookies from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A very special Happy 60th Birthday goes out to my good friend, none other than Appassionato Von Climax! She knows who she is! –js
