| Second round of emergency food and shelter funds distributed in Ottawa County |
|
PORT CLINTON, Ohio – Today, United Way in Ottawa County announced a $21,000 distribution from The Emergency Food and Shelter Board. This distribution came from federal funds to supplement emergency food and shelter programs under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. According to federal officials, “this funding is above and beyond the funds already awarded under Phase 27 and should be treated as such to address the great increases in unemployment and community need that are being seen by Local Boards and emergency service providers.”
Part of the funding allocation requirements was to reach the newly unemployed in unconventional ways. Firelands Food Pantry was awarded $2,000 to help families of Firelands Preschool that have been hit with unemployment. Also, Ottawa County Department of Jobs and Family Services was awarded $2,500 to help clients in crisis who also need food assistance. For emergency groceries, Benton-Carroll-Salem Food Pantry was awarded $2,000, Danbury Food Pantry was awarded $1,000, Faith House at Port Clinton Church of the Nazarene was awarded $2,000, and St. Vincent de Paul Society was awarded $8,000. For utilities and rent, the Salvation Army was awarded $3,391. The remaining $426 will be given to United Way in Ottawa County to cover the cost of administering this program. The local Ottawa County Emergency Food & Shelter Board made up of nonprofit representatives from around the county facilitates distribution of these funds.
