"He's quite an athlete," Coach May said about Gillett. "We've been watching him on film, and he makes plays both running and throwing. You know, I don't think anybody has really shut him down. You try to contain him the best you can."
Gillett completed just 4-of-10 passes for 99 yards and had one pass intercepted by Davey Burkett, but it was the Clyde running game in its spread offense that did the damage. Three Flier backs, including Gillett, ran for over 100 yards and a total of 10 Fliers ran with the football as Clyde totaled 502 net yards on the ground.
The Fliers had 23 first downs to Oak Harbor's 7, they dominated the Rockets in total yardage 601 to 128, and the Fliers never had to punt the entire contest.
Playing on Clyde's brand new field turf for the first time, Oak Harbor could do very little as Clyde scored three first quarter touchdowns, two of them on Gillett runs. Gillett scored from 14 and 18 yards and Tyler Ludrowsky scored from three yards out as the Fliers quickly put the game out of reach by grabbing a 21-0 lead.
In the second quarter, it was more of the same as Clyde again scored three times. Kade Kramer caught a 49-yard touchdown pass from Gillett with 11:21 remaining in the half, Kramer scored in a two-yard run with 5:54 remaining, and Kramer scored his third touchdown on a 31-yard run.
Kramer finished the game with 166 yards on 13 carries, Gillett rushed for 157 yards on 10 carries, and Caleb Lynch ran for 128 yards on six carries. Lynch had one 71-yard run in the fourth quarter for Clyde's final touchdown.
Clyde begins Division III playoff action this Saturday after winning the Sandusky Bay Conference crown. The Fliers defeated Huron 26-7 back on September 26 to secure the number one spot in the SBC, and will host a home game Saturday night. Oak Harbor's season ends at 2-8, 2-5 in the SBC.
Although they were without points on their final game this season under first-year coach May, the Oak Harbor Rockets were not without offense.
Sophomore quarterback Steve Young, who May has promised will be key to Oak Harbor's success in future seasons, completed 5-of-16 passes for 54 yards, including a 35-yard completion to Jake Scott.
"He took on the quarterback position at halftime of the Perkins game and he's been solid. He's only a sophomore, and we're real excited about him leading our offense the next couple years. He'll definitely give us some options to do some other things with our offense," Coach May told The Beacon.
But against Clyde, Young had three passes intercepted, preventing any sustained drives from reaching the Flier end zone.
Brad Perry caught two of Young's passes for nine yards, Jim Vassello caught one for eight yards, and Anthony Lattimo caught one for two yards.
Oak Harbor's ground game totaled 74 net yards on 37 carries, including 33 yards by Scott, 25 by Kyle Mincheff, and Young ran for 10 yards himself, but was also caught three times behind the line of scrimmage for seven yards in negative yardage, giving the young QB three net yards on five carries. Young also did the punting, booting six kicks 211 yards, which averages to 35.2 a kick with a long punt of 45 yards.
On kickoff returns, Vassello had five returns for 90 yards, including one 32-yard return. Jordan Cannet returned three kickoffs for 23 return yards, including a return of 16 yards.
