On April 10, Mr. Robert “Bob” Paule was honored as Ottawa County Veteran of the Year for 2012 at a celebration in his honor at the American Legion Post 279, Elmore. Bob is the second veteran
in Ottawa County to receive this honor.
The Ottawa County Veterans Service Commission selected Bob after reviewing several nominations. Bob’s commitment to the veterans in Ottawa County speaks volumes through his 60 years selfless service as a veterans advocate. “Bob served our country with honor when our country needed him during the Korean War era. Upon discharge, he continued to serve in the civilian sector. Bob was a three term Commander of the American Legion Post 279 Elmore and for sixty years he was active in all functions of the post, many community functions and local children and youth programs,” said Ronald Distel, President, Ottawa County Veterans Service Commission.
Bob joined the Ohio National Guard and then enlisted in the United States Army on October 11, 1951. He was honorably discharged on July 3, 1952, after successfully attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class. Bob has been an active member of the American Legion Post 279 and served as Commander in 1961, 1978, and 1986; Ways and Means Chairman for over twenty years; National Convention Delegate in 1984 and 1985; member of 40 et 8; and organized the first American Legion Post 279 Easter Egg Hunt.
Bob received recognition of his selection by several community organizations. Ron Distel, President, Ottawa County Veterans Service Commission, was the master of ceremonies. Elizabeth Sutton, Secretary, Ottawa County Veterans Service Commission, presented Bob with a U.S. flag and certificate authenticating that it flew above the Ottawa County Veterans Service Office on the day of the ceremony. Gary Cagle, Member, Ottawa County Veterans Service Commission, presented Bob with a plaque. The Board of County Commissioners of Ottawa County commended Robert E. Paule for his service to our country, dedication to our county veterans and his selection as Ottawa County Veteran of the Year for 2012 and proclaimed April 10 as “Robert E. Paule Day” throughout all of Ottawa County. Lowell Krumnow, Mayor of Elmore, commended Robert E. Paule for his selection as Ottawa County Veteran of the Year 2012 and presented a proclamation. District Commander Bill McGlothlin thanked Bob for his service and dedication. American Legion Post 279 Commander Dennis Freimark, who nominated Bob, thanked Bob for his service and presented two certificates. Rick Neeb from the Sons of the American Legion thanked Bob for his dedication. Sue Avers, President, American Legion Post 279 Auxiliary, presented Bob with a Certificate of Achievement. William Sorg, Director, American Legion Riders Elmore Chapter presented Bob with a certificate.
Bob’s son, Tom Paule, and grandson, Patrick Paule, spoke of their memories growing up around the events of the American Legion Post 279 and Bob’s dedication throughout the years. Many of Bob’s family were in attendance. Friends and family expressed their memories and gratitude of Mr. Paule. Also in attendance was Candidate for 2nd Vice Commander for the Department of Ohio 2013-2014 James Campbell.
