Truth Ministries’ No Child Hungry program

"With your love, help, prayers, support and donations we can make a difference here in Ottawa County so that there is no child hungry, “ reads the sign at Truth Ministries. On Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 6:30 p.m. the doors of Truth Ministries were open, welcoming the community to a free meal. The first Wednesday of every month Truth Ministries offers a free meal, but that’s not all they’re offering the community. Located in the former Portage Elementary building, Truth Ministries also houses a resale shop and a food pantry. Both the resale shop and food pantry are run on donations. Kroger recently donated three pallets of frozen food to the food pantry for the community meal on Wednesday. Kroger, Bassett’s, St. Joseph’s in Marblehead, private donors and a grant from the Ottawa County Foundation are the primary donors to the food pantry. “That’s what keeps us going,” said Lois Tuttamore.

Tuttamore is an inspiration for the program Truth Ministries participates in called No Child Goes Hungry. “1 in 5 children go hungry in America,” said Tuttamore. “That’s what has inspired us to start this program for the community.” If people cannot get themselves to Truth Ministries for the free meal, a bus will pick people up who want to attend.

In the resale shop, prices are “lower than a garage sale,” said Tuttamore. All clothing is a quarter a piece. There are also beds, furniture, books and more. The books are free. “We would rather people take and use the books than have them sit here because someone can’t afford to buy them,” Tuttamore said.

With all these additional services that are offered for the community, it is not to be forgotten that there are also church services happening in the Truth Ministries building. Church services are held at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays. A nursery and Sunday school are available. Pastor Brian Hild said, “We are the church of the second chance. We want to be the kind of church Jesus would start.”

The Church of Truth Ministries, the food pantry and the resale shop are located at 745 S. Lake Street in Gypsum. For more information, call 419-557-4903
