This is the big weekend! The Ottawa County Relay for Life begins at 6 p.m. Friday, June 8 , and lasts until noon Saturday, June 9. So much is planned for those 18 exciting hours at the Oak Harbor High School Athletic Field.
With a Disney-themed — “When You Wish Upon A Cure” — the planning committee created themed laps along with some traditional favorites for the 18 registered teams. All survivors are invited to the Dessert Reception in the Auxiliary gym from 4:30 to 4:45 p.m. T-shirts and goodie bags will be available here also.
The opening ceremony begins at 6 p.m. with Ronald McDonald helping to kick off this high-energy event. He will be at the relay until 8 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
Enjoy the food at the concession stand and special items at the team tents. Bid on a piece of art or a themed basket, watch an adult basketball tournament, take your photo at the old-fashioned photo booth using dress-up items, eat a rootbeer float — do some or all.
A memory tent is available for pictures of loved ones, to write a message or just to remember.
The Luminaria Ceremony begins at 10 p.m. Luminaries can be purchased at Relay for survivors, cancer victims or for caretakers. A Remembrance Lap follows at 11 and reminds all why we walk and work so hard to collect funds to fight this killer.
At 8 a.m. Saturday, wake up with a Zumba class. The Lions Club will prepare breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. and donate a portion of the proceeds to Relay. Harbor Lights will perform during the 9 to 10 a.m. Princess Lap then teams will be challenged with the Scrabble lap which completes the special laps for Relay. Help your favorite team create the longest word from letters collected by walkers during the hour. From 11:30 until noon, complete one last lap with your team and attend the closing ceremony.
Remember, we do this to save lives and celebrate more birthdays. Stay well, get well, find a cure and fight back.
