2013 Senior Hall Of Fame Recipient

Ottawa County Senior Resources inducted six new Senior Hall of Fame recipients at their 2013 Spring Senior Day, held at Camp Perry Clubhouse on Wednesday, May 8th. Each recipient received a plaque commemorating their service to the seniors and citizens of Ottawa County. The recipients of this year’s awards are: Joseph ‘Bob’ Klacik, nominated by the Danbury Senior Center; Joanne Price, nominated by the Elmore Golden Oldies Senior Center; Daryl Ann Gibson, nominated by the Genoa Senior Center; Vicki Balduf, nominated by the Oak Harbor ‘Harbor Lights’ Senior Center; Sandra Konzan, nominated by the Port Clinton Senior Center and Tip Niese, nominated by the Put-in-Bay Senior Center.

Magruder Auxiliary volunteers honored

Magruder Hospital Auxiliary conducted their Annual Appreciation Lunch at which volunteers were honored for their hours of service in various areas of the hospital during 2012. This year the volunteers were treated with a visit from “Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the World,” portrayed by Linda Laronge, as entertainment for the afternoon.

The Auxiliary had 44 volunteers recognized with pins for their many hours of service to Magruder Hospital through December 2012. Volunteers honored for their hours of service this year were:

Finding your family tree’s Ohio roots

Even if you did not grow up in Ohio, you likely have family roots that extend into the Buckeye State. The Hayes Presidential Center offers a class specifically designed to help you find your Ohio ancestors. Head Librarian Becky Hill is instructor for “Searching Your Ohio Roots”. The class takes place 9:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 18, in the Hayes Research Library and is sponsored by RootsMagic Inc. Cost is $10/adults and $5/students through high school. Kiwanis honors Law Enforcement Officers of the Year

On Wednesday Port Clinton Kiwanis honored the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Deputy of the Year and the Port Clinton Police Department Officer of the Year. This year both rewards honored two recipients.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Deputies of the Year are Deputy Marc Nye and his K9 partner Nero. Nye is a nine year veteran of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s office. He began as a corrections officer in 2004, was promoted to the Patrol division in 2006 and was promoted to K9 Handler in 2012. He is also a member of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team. Nero is a 3 year old Belgian Malinois who received his training in Columbus and Fremont. He is a dual-purposed dog who excels in narcotics detection.

Slow down for litter crews

Discarded trash in our communities and along our roadways is ugly and unwanted. It can also be costly in time and maintenance of equipment for township and county road crews when they are working, or mowing along our roadways. Litter is also a hazard for animals in their natural habitats.

In an effort to reduce those costs and the danger of unsightly litter, local agencies are cooperating together to solve the problem. The OSS Solid Waste District contracts with the county Juvenile Courts in Ottawa, Sandusky and Seneca Counties for supervision of a Litter Crew to clean District roadways. Weather permitting; thousands of pounds of debris are being removed from township and county thoroughfares during the course of a year.
