Kitty is joined by her husband John and son Ben.The Multipurpose Room of Ottawa County Riverview Healthcare Campus was filled with staff members and their family members March 1 for a special night of recognition and celebration.
The evening began with a presentation that featured facility-wide honors Riverview achieved in 2011 including the admission of 257 residents/patients and the return of 181 of those admissions, or 70 percent, back to the community. The facility also celebrated its Medicare 5 Star rating, which the facility has maintained for nine consecutive quarters. The facility has been named on the U.S. News and World Reports listing of “Best Nursing Homes” for both 2011 and 2012. The facility also achieved a perfect state survey and has been nominated by fellow Port Clinton Chamber Members for the 2011 Lighthouse Award. In July of 2011, Riverview faced cuts to its Medicaid reimbursement at $18,000 per month and again faced cuts from Medicare in October. Despite these drastic cuts, the facility was able to secure a $61,508 surplus for the year.

Riverview recognized Kitty Bergman (STNA), Darian Marinis (STNA), Carla Scott (LPN) and Chris Woods of laundry for perfect attendance for the entire year. These dedicated employees not only made it to their jobs each day, but were never tardy or left early.

The highlight of the evening was the announcement of 2011 Employee of the Year. The Staff of Riverview Healthcare Campus votes for the winner of this honor from the 12 employees of the month. The vote was very close this year, being separated by only one vote. Runner-up Kelly Weirich received an assorted basket of goodies as well a spring floral arrangement. Kitty Bergman was announced Riverview’s 2011 Employee of the Year.
Bergman is originally from Illinois but met husband, John, in Colorado. While living in Colorado, the couple had three of their four children and decided to move closer to family. The family lived in Genoa for seven years and then built a home in the Benton-Carroll-Salem School system, and has resided there ever since.
Bergman was a stay-at-home mom until her youngest son, Ben, began school. When she began looking for employment outside of the home, she wanted something that was close to her family. She enrolled in Riverview’s State Test Nurse Aide classes with the intention to “get her foot in the door” in the hopes she would eventually apply for an office position once something became available. Bergman found through the years she liked being close to home and “really liked having more contact with our residents” so she decided to become a Restorative STNA, the position she currently holds in the facility.
Bergman names retired STNA, Anne Witt, as her mentor.
“She trained me, she did everything by the book and she is such a good person in general,” she said. “I don’t think I ever told her how much I appreciated how she taught me. I try to be nice to everyone and welcome new employees since I know how much I appreciated her treating me so well.”
Bergman offered these words of wisdom to others: “working with the elderly people as well as residents that are sick, I’ve learned it is so important to use your time wisely-time goes so fast, try to make a difference in the time you have.”
The Employee of the Year honor is accompanied by a front row parking spot for an entire year and employee of the year lapel pin. A prize basket with donations from local individuals and businesses was also awarded. The basket included Cookie Lady Cookies from Home Instead Senior Care, an Avon gift set from Linda Hartigan, four day-passes from Schedel’s Gardens in Elmore, a $20 gift certificate to the Riverview Gift Shop from the Riverview Auxiliary, free income tax preparation and a T-shirt from Liberty Tax Service, a $25 MasterCard gift card from Ottawa County Commissioner Jim Sass and his wife Molly, a Target gift card from Lifestar, a $25 Subway gift card from Concept Rehab, 100 Vendor Bucks from Northwood Vending, a Bath & Body Works gift basket from Jean Marquette, gift basket from Stein Hospice, two roundtrip tickets on the Jet Express from Kendra German, a $25 Visa gift card from Carla Scott and a $20 gift card to Pizza Hut from Robin Pfeiffer.
Riverview would like to thank their entire staff for a successful 2011, as well as special congratulations to 2011 Employee of the Year, Kitty Bergman.
