National park tourism in Ohio creates $156.7 million in economic benefit

A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that 2,611,158 visitors to national parks in Ohio spent $156.7 million and supported 2,437 jobs in the state in 2012.

“The national parks of Ohio attract visitors from across the country and around the world and provide premiere historical, cultural, natural, and recreational experiences,” said NPS Midwest Regional Director Michael T. Reynolds.  “This new report shows that national park tourism is a significant driver in the national economy, returning $10 for every $1 invested. Funding generated by national parks has a swift and direct positive impact on local economies in Ohio as well.”

The national parks in Ohio are:  Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument, Xenia; Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Brecksville; Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, Dayton; First Ladies National Historic Site, Canton; Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, Chillicothe; James A. Garfield National Historic Site, Mentor; Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial, Put-in-Bay; and William Howard Taft National Historic Site, Cincinnati.
