On Monday, May 12, at Otterbein North Shore Senior Lifestyle Choices, 9400 North Shore Blvd., Lakeside-Marblehead, at 3 p.m., guests will learn about volunteer opportunities at the area’s top continuing care retirement campus. According to “Give to Live” by Douglas M. Lawson, Ph.D., “Giving is not just a minor influence on good health but the key to bodily and mental well-being. Studies show that for all ages, one way to escape premature physical and emotional deterioration is by staying in the service of others.”
Opportunities at Otterbein include transportation needs, crafters in Assisted Living, gardening, gift shop volunteering (all proceeds go back to fund important projects on campus), and the newly developed “Be a Compassionate Friend”initiative, which is spending one-on-one time with a resident in need of a friend. Loneliness is a key to depression in elderly folks, but knowing someone is there to talk to can deplete that loneliness in no time.
