Men’s Chorus making stop in Oak Harbor

The Ohio Northern University Men’s Chorus will be in concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 17, at St. Paul United Church of Christ, 165 Toussaint St., Oak Harbor. The community is invited to attend the concert as this 40-voice ensemble from Ada, makes a stop in Oak Harbor during their Spring Tour of the Midwest. A freewill offering will be received.
Under the direction of Dr. Ben Ayling, Director of Choral Activities, and Anthony Taylor, Student Assistant Director, the ONU Men’s Chorus has been pleasing audiences since 2002 with its varied repertoire, contagious enthusiasm and rich male harmonies. It is comprised of students from many majors as well as faculty, staff, alumni and community members, and is one of the University’s prime touring ensembles, having toured to seven states since its inception.
Dr. Ben Ayling conducts and administers the ONU choirs as well as teaching Choral Conducting and Choral Methods. He comes to Ohio Northern from Kent State, where he was founder and conductor of the KSU Men’s Chorus. He is sought after as a conductor, clinician, adjudicator, and speaker; served as guest conductor of state and regional honors choirs in Ohio, Georgia and Tennessee; taught choral music in public schools, including Sylvania, for 20 years; and sang bass in The Ritz, the 1991 International Champion Quartet of the Barbershop Harmony Society.

Birding tradition continues

Tom Bartlett’s not waiting for Hollywood to come calling. His Big Sit is not as visually-stunning or as dramatic as the birding quest that led to the movie, “The Big Year,” starring Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson.
The film chronicled the competition of three birders attempting to break the record of 721 birds seen in a single year. The movie was based on the adventures of Greg Miller, a computer consultant from Canton, Ohio, who spent an estimated $31,000 chasing the record.
