The Musical Arts Series at Firelands will host the return of the popular pianists, the Westhuizen Duo, at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, at Firelands Presbyterian Church, 2626 E. Harbor Road, Port Clinton. The van der Westhuizens, Pierre and his wife Sophia, play with four hands on one piano, presenting music that has been hailed by audiences and critics alike not only for their sensitivity to each other, but also for playing that is charming, lyrical and brilliant. Their Port Clinton concert will include selections from Debussy, Faure, Schumann and Brahms.
Pierre and Sophia have both served on the faculty of Heidelberg University as professors of piano and assistant co-coordinators of the keyboard division. Originally from South Africa, they completed their studies at the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, have presented concerts in all of the major concert halls in South Africa and have appeared in major festivals and venues throughout the US.
Pierre was recently appointed as the Executive Director of the prestigious Cleveland International Piano Competition, and Sophia has joined the faculty of Youngstown State University. This summer they will serve as artists in residence at the Cleveland Institute of Music's Summer Sonata Festival and at the University of Northern Colorado's International Piano Festival
Tickets for the performance are available at the door for $15; students are admitted for free. Audience members will be invited to welcome the performers at a reception following the concert. This performance is sponsored by Brands’ Marina and National Bank of Ohio.
