The Oak Harbor FFA Chapter will play host to the annual fishing derby during Sunday, July 22, during the Ottawa County Fair. All kids ages 12 and under are invited. The event will take place at the race track infield pond and will begin promptly at scheduled times: the 0-5 age group will begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by the 6-12 age group starting at 11 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to the boys and girls of each class for the most fish caught (ties broken by total weight of the catch), largest fish caught (by weight) or smallest fish caught (by weight). There is also a guaranteed prize for every contestant that registers before July 18.
Contestants are encouraged to bring their own fishing poles and may bring their own bait, however poles and bait will be provided to contestants who need them. The contestants are permitted one pole with a single hook and they must also hold their own fishing poles while fishing. Adults are permitted to assist in baiting the hook and are allowed to help land the fish. Contestants must also wear shoes. The pre-registration for the fishing derby for a guaranteed prize is due at 8 a.m. Wednesday, July 18. The final registration time is 6 p.m. Saturday, July 21. The registration cards can be picked up 15 minutes before the scheduled time.
The Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District will be assisting with the derby.
