Catawba Island man named TOPS Ohio State King

Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) held the Ohio State Recognition Days on April 11 and 12 in Cincinnati. This annual event honors TOPS members for outstanding weight loss and/or maintaining weight goals during the previous year.

Philip Carstensen, a member of TOPS chapter OH 1487, Port Clinton, joined the chapter in January, 2013, and reached his ideal goal weight in November, 2013, without registering a single weight gain. Phil lost 58.5 pounds to goal. By reaching the goal weight set for him by his doctor he became a KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly). He also won First Place in male weight Division 3 (250-200 lbs.) Divisions for male and female are based on starting weight of the year and there is a 50 pound difference between each Division. Philip lost the most weight to goal than any other male member in Ohio reaching KOPS status. This earned him the honor of Ohio State King for 2013. The Ohio State Queen is Myra Mayle of TOPS OH 1405, McConnelsville. Myra lost 108.5 pounds to goal.

Other members of TOPS OH 1487, Port Clinton, who attended the SRD are Janine Dress, Cindy Fedor, Karen Hull and Sue Mooney. Phil’s wife, Jody Carstensen, also attended the event. Karen Hull, a TOPS Area Captain and a 31 year KOPS, was honored as the Top Area Captain in Ohio for 2013.

OH 1487, Port Clinton, meets every Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. at the Catawba Community Hall, 3307 NW Catawba Road, on Catawba Island. How to enjoy an outdoor winter workout

Winter is here, along with the temptation to curl up on the couch with a cup of hot cocoa all season long. Chilly temperatures deter many from exercising outdoors, and while some prefer to head to the gym to keep up their fitness routine, seasonal activities can also offer great full-body workouts, says TOPS Club, Inc.® (Take Off Pounds Sensibly®), the nonprofit weight-loss support organization. Consider the following activities to break out of your routine and stave off winter weight gain:

• Ski across a winter wonderland

Build up your strength while enjoying nature’s beauty. Cross-country skiing works both your upper and lower body, sculpting shoulders, arms, back, chest, abs, buttocks, and legs. Work up a refreshing sweat for more than 500 calories burned per hour.
