Fly-In event features free airplane rides

“Tin Goose” Chapter 1247 of the Experimental Aircraft Association will be hosting its annual Fly-In/Drive-In Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, Aug. 19. This event is open to the public and will be held at the Erie-Ottawa Regional Airport, 3255 E. State Road, Port Clinton, from 8 a.m. to noon.
Breakfast includes coffee, juice, sausage and all-you-can-eat pancakes. Cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children.
There will be free introductory airplane rides for youth ages 8-17. These Young Eagle flights are provided by local EAA volunteers and give kids and opportunity to take a ride in a general aviation aircraft.
Also on hand will be tickets for Baumann's Auto Charity Raffle, a 50/50 drawing, airplanes, classic cars and Ford Tri-Motor souvenirs.

​Visit the Wildlife Refuge

The Ottawa Wildlife Refuge Auto Tour will be open to all visitors with wheels on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 18-19. Drive through 7 miles of Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge that are normally closed to the public. New entrance from the Visitor Center parking lot opens at 8 a.m. and closes and 4 p.m.
If you’ve always wondered what all the “birders” are doing running around Northwest Ohio, come to the refuge at 9 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, for a Beginner Bird Walk. A seasoned naturalist will guide you on how to spot and identify birds on Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. Binoculars and field guide will be available to borrow.

Locals earn scholarships for BGSU Firelands

Caly Anne Laurents, of Port Clinton, and Tamera Lynn Helle, of Oak Harbor, have received the Bowling Green State University Firelands College Community Scholarship. Laurents will receive $1,244 toward tuition for the 2012-2013 academic year. She is a junior majoring in visual communication technology at BGSU Firelands where she has been on the Dean’s List and maintained a 3.95 GPA. She has won the Visual Communication Technology Award and twice won the Outstanding Technical Award for Theatre. She has been inducted into the Society of the Flame, Phi Eta Sigma and Wellgates International Honor Society. She is active with the Speech Activities Organization – Theatre and Visual Communications Technology Organization.
She is married to Joe Simko and she is the daughter of Phil Lacer and Victoria Laurents, of Port Clinton.
Helle has received the Health Careers Unlimited Scholarship and will receive $300 toward tuition plus an additional $200 book as a companion scholarship. has received the Health Careers Unlimited Scholarship
This award, sponsored by the Health Careers Unlimited organization, is available to a sophomore majoring in a health career field at BGSU Firelands. Recipients must have a “B” average and be from Erie, Ottawa, Sandusky, Huron, or Seneca counties.
Helle is a 2010 graduate of Oak Harbor High School and a sophomore majoring in nursing at BGSU Firelands. She is the daughter of Ron Helle and Tracey Schiller.

Farm tire recycling coming up

The agricultural community will once again have an opportunity to recycle unwanted farm tires through a collection sponsored by the Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca Joint Solid Waste District. The event will be held at the Sandusky County Fairgrounds in Fremont at the north parking lot. This collection is open to farm owners, operators and residents in the three-county area (including Bellevue and Fostoria residents). Absolutely no dealers or agri-business will be permitted.
Pre-registration is required to participate. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 13, and will end at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24. Prior to calling, know the number of tires by type/size that you would like to recycle. When the office is contacted, a representative from the District will provide you with a time for delivering your tires and confirm the cost based on the quantity and diameter of tires being recycled. It is important that all participants bring proof of residency (driver’s license) to the collection site. Seniors honor Vietnam Vets

More than 100 seniors from across the county came together today at Riverview Healthcare Campus, home of the Harbor Lights Senior Center, to honor our country’s Vietnam Veterans and the procession of the Vietnam Combat Veterans' Moving Wall as it passed through Ottawa County on it way to Elmore.
Seniors gathered at the Multipurpose Room of Riverview beginning at 9:30 a.m. for a coffee and doughnut social sponsored by Walker Family Funeral Homes. Dave Ninke performed several patriotic songs in preparation of the procession. After the coffee social, seniors proceeded to the road to honor their fellow countrymen. Many carried signs and waved American Flags in tribute to the many veteran motorcycle riders who accompanied the procession.

The wall is set up now at Depot Park in Elmore.

‘Dolphin Tale’ showing rescheduled

Main Street Port Clinton has rescheduled “Dolphin Tale” to Thursday, Aug. 16, at Waterworks Park. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs to claim your spot in front of the large inflatable movie screen. Concessions will be available for a donation or you may bring your own. The movie will begin at dusk, around 8:45 p.m.
The next show will be “Happy Feet,” on Aug. 30.
Sponsorship opportunities are still available. For $500, your organization may show a commercial before and after each film. Your banners will be displayed on the concession tables and your organization will be announced as a sponsor at all events and meetings.

Tent sale, fashion show coming up

Port Clinton’s new children’s consignment shop, Flip Flop Kids Swap, is having an End-of-Summer Tent Sale Event at 10 a.m. Aug. 25. The event will feature a fashion show with local handmade dresses and apparel for your little ones By Toe-Head Cuteique.
There will also be a bake sale and lemonade stand with all proceeds going to childhood cancer research.

Lakeside Antique Show

The Lakeside Antique Show will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25. The show, located in Lakeside’s South Auditorium, Wesley Lodge and Wo-Ho-Mis and on the lawns of these three buildings, features more than 85 dealers.
Items to be offered for sale include china, glassware, furniture, books, quilts, fine and costume jewelry, perfume bottles, ladies’ accessories, sports memorabilia, kitchenware, cookie jars, postcards, linens, vintage clothing, dolls, toys, sterling and much more.

Pop Up Shoots planned at Camp Perry

The Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association will hold Pop-Up Shoots at Camp Perry on Labor Day weekend. Rifle will be Saturday, Sept. 1., with pistol set for Sunday, Sept. 2.
These pop-up shoots are held on the MRFR Range for rifle (located just forward of the parking lot on Viale Range and Young Range) and on the Combat Pistol Range for Pistol (located behind the CMP Airgun Complex).
The course of fire for both events is 40 shots at 40 pop-up silhouette targets.

PCMS cross country practice begins

Practice for the Port Clinton Middle School cross country team began on Monday, Aug. 6. Students in grades seven and eight who want to participate should meet at the Port Clinton High School Main entrance at 8:30 a.m. for practice until 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The week of Aug. 13, practice will be held at East Harbor State Park. Students should meet at the Lockwood Shelter house at 8 a.m. for practice until 9:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.
