Port Clinton falls to Huron, 48-8

On Friday night, Port Clinton went up against one of the Sandusky Bay Conference's best teams and found out just how difficult it is to defend a player like Cody Thompson.

The senior quarterback, who is headed to the University of Toledo next year on a football scholarship, had 203 yards of total offense and scored three touchdowns in leading the Tigers to a 48-8 victory at Kalahari Field at Huron Memorial Stadium.

Bataan Day Ceremony Is November 8

The annual Bataan Day ceremony will be held this year on Friday, Nov. 8, at 9 a.m. in the Bataan Memorial School Gymnasium.  

The students and staff of Bataan Memorial Elementary School invite members of the community to their Bataan Day Ceremony. This year, students and staff are organizing a food drive in conjunction with the VFW Post 2480 to benefit local veterans in need. Students and guests are asked to bring a non-perishable food item with them on Nov. 8.

Danbury loses to Ottawa Hills, looks to finish the season on a high note

Ottawa Hills controlled this one throughout, scoring on its first two possessions before rolling to a 53-14 victory over Danbury.

The Green Bears, who improved to 3-5 and and 3-2 in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference, jumped out to a 14-0 lead behind two touchdown runs (4, 9) by Austin Stevens before the Lakers (2-6, 1-4 TAAC) responded by driving 72 yards and scoring a touchdown on a 4-yard run by Cody German to cut the deficit in half early in the second quarter.

Rockets run for nearly 500 yards in win over SMCC

In a back-and-forth game that featured three first-half ties, Oak Harbor took the lead for good late in the second quarter before slowly building a lead to defeat St. Mary Central Catholic, 42-21.

The win, which came after two consecutive losses, moves the Rockets to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the Sandusky Bay Conference. The Panthers, meanwhile, drop to 2-6 and 1-4 in the league.

St. Joseph Annual Orange and Grapefruit Sale

St. Joseph Church Choir, Marblehead, will kick off their annual Orange and Grapefruit Sale on Saturday, Oct. 26. The choir will be taking orders for fresh citrus fruit from Florida’s Indian River. The sale will last from Oct. 26 until Nov. 11. Fruit will be ready for pick up on Dec. 14 & 15.

Buyers may choose from grove-fresh Florida navel oranges, tangelos and red grapefruit. Sales are by the cartons of 2/5 and 4/5 boxes. Mixed boxes and variety packs are also available.

Bassett’s Market switches weekly fliers to The Beacon

Beacon Publisher John Schaffner welcomes Mike Bassett and the Bassett's Market flier to The Beacon family of insert customers. 

Bassett’s Market, a locally owned family business who has called Ottawa County its home since the late 1800s, has announced a major change in its marketing direction. As of Oct. 24, the famous Bassett’s weekly flier will now be a regular insert into The Beacon.

PCHS grad Blackburn receives Best of Cleveland award

Port Clinton High School and Kent State graduate artist Farin Blackburn was recently awarded a Best of Cleveland recognition in the October issue of Cleveland Magazine. Blackburn’s Seaworthi posters for college towns such as Kent and Athens are “a collision of funky calligraphy and geography”, said the article. She also has created a poster of “Young Cleveland”, which “includes new businesses and old, places that are creating a city for young artists and young professionals,” Blackburn says.
