Perch, Peach, Pierogi & Polka Festival in Port Clinton Aug.30-Sept. 1

2012 Festival 

The 9th annual Perch, Peach, Pierogi and Polka Festival will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in downtown Port Clinton at 109 E. Perry Street over Labor Day Weekend. This year the event will begin on Friday, Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. The fun, food and polka music will continue on Saturday, Aug. 31 and Sunday, Sept. 1. The festival will be open from 5-11 p.m. on Friday and from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

Lake Erie Solo Challenge

I am absolutely amazed and touched by the interest and support I got during the Lake Erie Solo Challenge. This was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done.  I was expecting it to be difficult; it is supposed to be difficult, and not everyone is expected to complete it.  One sailor was making his third attempt. The physical, mental, and psychological challenges pushed every limit I had.  However, the rewards were commensurate.  I’m not exaggerating to say that it was a profound experience and I learned a tremendous amount, about single-handing, sailing in general and about myself.

Port Clinton boys defeat Toledo Bowsher and Sylvia Southview

Port Clinton boys’ soccer team traveled to Toledo Bowsher Thursday evening. The final game score was 7-0 in favor of Port Clinton.  The Redskins scored five goals in the first half and two in the second. The goals were scored by Josh Brown (3), Carter Rumball (1), Logan Hepp (1) and Simon Shulz (2). Assists were provided by Nathan Stubblefield, Ben Heminger, Marcus Hogan, Alex St. Leger and Chris Winke.

Instrumental ensembles begin new semester at Terra State

Instrumental Ensembles at Terra State Community College in Fremont are forming for the fall semester.

Terra Brass Choir is an ensemble open to all brass instrumentalists (trumpet, trombone, horn, euphonium and tuba). The Brass Choir is known for its popular "Organ and Brass" concerts and their collaborative performances with Terra’s choral and chamber music programs. Performing both classical and contemporary works, the Terra Brass Choir meets Mondays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. beginning Sept. 9.

Daddy’s Gonna Kill Ralphie calls Port Clinton home

Port Clinton natives Rob Zajac and Kyle Kilmer released their fourth studio album, To Ohio, At Last, with their band Daddy’s Gonna Kill Ralphie (DGKR)at a CD release show Saturday, Aug. 17. Other members of the band, Corey Salts of Vickery and Toby Fallsgraff of Chicago, although not natives of Port Clinton, feel that Port Clinton is the home of DGKR.

3 on 3 basketball tournament and picnic benefits Conestoga West End

 

The Conestoga West End held their annual 3 on 3 basketball tournament and neighborhood picnic on Saturday, Aug. 24. The event,  in conjunction with United Way in Ottawa County, raised money for the Conestoga West End neighborhood. The year before last the event raised enough money to purchase new backboards and basketball poles for the backboards. This year organizers hoped to raise money towards a new basketball court, playground equipment, a shelter house and maybe even a splash pad for the park.
