Plat books available at OSU extension office

The new Ottawa County Plat Book published by the Farm & Home Publishers is now available. What is a plat book? It is a public record that contains maps of land, showing the division of the land into streets, blocks, and lots and indicates the measurements of the individual parcels. Copies are available for $20 at the Ohio State University Extension Ottawa County office, located at 240 W. Lake St., Unit C, Oak Harbor. All proceeds to benefit the Ottawa County 4-H Program.


Perry’s Victory at Ida Rupp

Jeff Helmer, Park Ranger at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial on South Bass Island, will be at the Ida Rupp Public Library on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Mr. Helmer will be speaking at 7 p.m. 

September 10 is the 200th Anniversary of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s victory over the British fleet in the Battle of Lake Erie. Mr. Helmer will offer a Power Point presentation detailing the events leading up to the battle and the effects that Perry’s victory had regarding U.S. control of the Great Lakes and its expansion west of Ohio.


Cedar Point named Best in the World

The results are in and for the 16th consecutive year, Cedar Point® amusement park/resort in Sandusky, has been voted the “Best Amusement Park in the World”. The popular vacation destination won this coveted award at Saturday night’s annual Golden Ticket Awards ceremony in Santa Cruz, CA. Cedar Point has earned the top honor every year since the inception of the Golden Ticket Awards in 1998.


Toledo Symphony at Meadowbrook

Black Swamp Conservancy and the Toledo Symphony are collaborating to bring music and nature together at Meadowbrook Marsh on Sept. 8th at 2 p.m.  This concert is free and open to the public. There will also be guided nature walks of the preserve beginning at 12:30.  Those attending are asked to park at the Dempsey Fishing Access on E. Bayshore Road.  A free trolley service will begin at 11:30 am to shuttle attendees from the parking area to the preserve and back.  The concert will take place rain or shine.  Please bring lawn chairs or blankets, no formal seating will be provided.



International Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Awareness Day, September 9

Every 4½ minutes, a baby is born with a major birth defect in the United States. Major birth defects are conditions present at birth that cause structural changes in one or more parts of the body. They can have a serious effect on health, development, or functional ability. In Ohio, this is approximately 4,500 babies each year.


B-C-S invites nominations for “Alum Highlight”

Four times per calendar year, the Benton-Carroll-Salem School District will highlight the accomplishments of its graduates who reside in our area, the nation, and the world. The B-C-S Alum Highlight will be featured in the Sampler and in other media throughout our area. BCS invites the community to submit nominations for individuals to be featured as the quarterly B-C-S Alum Highlight. Nominees must meet the following criteria:


Cystic Fibrosis walk at Danbury Track

On Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Danbury Track Danbury Local Schools will have a walk to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF). The event will include music and dancing, with donations collected upon entry. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a life threatening genetic disorder that affects the lungs and the pancreas. People with CF need to take multiple medications and breathing treatments just to control the symptoms. CF is the leading cause of lung transplants in children.

Erie MetroParks employee, Charlene Margetiak, brought her 2-month old baby bunnies to Edgewood Manor Health and Rehabilitation Center for everyone to experience and enjoy.


Port Clinton volleyball team loses to Perkins

Port Clinton’s Lady Redskins volleyball varsity lost a tough match Thursday night to the Perkins Pirates, 25-16, 25-10, 25-15. Senior Hannah Sarty served 8 points for the Lady Redskins while senior Ericka Castillo had 10 digs. Sophomore Marissa Day was 24 for 27 on serves received while finishing with 7 digs and 5 kills. Sophomore Taylor Zink had 3 blocks for the Redskins.
