The focus of sailboat racing in the Islands area in the next week will be on the Juniors. The young ladies and gentlemen who compete for their home Yacht Clubs will be in intense action along the shores of Lake Erie.


Lakeside Chautauqua welcomes Jim Petro and Nancy Petro

Jim Petro, former Attorney General of Ohio, and his wife, Nancy Petro, will give four lectures as part of the 2013 Lakeside Chautauqua Lecture Series.  

Based on their book, “False Justice: Eight Myths that Convict the Innocent”, the Petros will speak on the subject of wrongful criminal conviction during four 90-minute lectures scheduled for 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 22 and Tuesday, July 23.


Kelleys Island Pub Crawl and Progressive Beer Dinner

The Stein Hospice benefit Pub Crawl & Progressive Beer Dinner is Sunday, Aug. 4. The five-course dinner with paired beers from Great Lakes Brewing Company starts at the Casino at 4 p.m. and ends at a downtown restaurant.  All locations are within walking distance.

Gospel sing and worship at Tall Timbers

St. John and St. Paul Lutheran, Lakeside-Marblehead, join together in inviting the guests and residents of the area to an outdoor gospel hymn sing, worship and picnic at Tall Timbers Campground at 340 S. Christy Chapel Road, Port Clinton.  The event is titled "Shall We Gather at the Shelter" and will be held Sunday, July 28th, with the hymn sing beginning at 9:30 a.m., worship at 10 (including puppets and Vacation Bible School singers) and a picnic at 11a.m.  Hot dogs, burgers and beverages will be provided.  Side dishes and desserts are welcome.  If you would like more information about this event or about Vacation Bibles School at Tall Timbers (July 22-26, 9 a.m.-noon), call 419-734-1662 or go to This email address is being protected from spambots. Back to School Backpack Drive

The Ottawa County Republican Women in conjunction with the Salvation Army are sponsoring a Back to School Backpack Drive. The Drive will benefit the Port Clinton, Oak Harbor, Genoa and Elmore communities with backpacks and school supplies for families unable to purchase them.

The collection of backpacks and supplies goes through August 3. There are listings of supplies needed and drop off boxes at Bassett’s Market in Port Clinton, Miller’s New Market in Genoa, Mann Technologies in Williston, Pills & Packages in Elmore and Community Market in Oak Harbor.

Gem Beach yoga has been discontinued

Gem Beach yoga has been discontinued for the rest of the summer. For five years Gem Beach has hosted yoga in the mornings, and participants have contributed hundreds of dollars to United Way in Ottawa County.


Senator Gardner maintains 100% voting record

State Senator Randy Gardner (R-Bowling Green) completed the recent legislative session with his career-long 100% voting record intact.

Gardner, who represents Fulton, Lucas, Wood, Ottawa and Erie counties in the Senate, did not miss any roll call votes during the first half of 2013 (149 votes).  He has not missed a roll call vote on any bill or amendment as a member of the House of Representatives or Senate since 1985, bringing his consecutive voting streak to 9,281 votes.
