Ragbag Report: Rubbin' is Racin'

I just finished sailing in the Bayview One Design Regatta up in Lake St. Clair hosted by Bayview Yacht Club. It was three tough days of racing in heavy air all three days. It was really intense! My thanks to my crew members who performed very well.

We had eight S2 9.1 boats in our class, and those boats raced in very tight quarters. They ran 9 races in three days with an absolute ton of sail handling. Special thanks to Bryan Huntley who took the helm for the races on Saturday and Sunday; Jeff Witter, who is an excellent tactician, and his lovely wife Stacy, who is one of the best of the best on the bow…all from Sandusky. Bryan and Jeff recently returned from Charleston Race Week, having qualified for a major championship regatta thanks to their stellar performance aboard Infra Red, Bryan’s 33-year-old Kelly 28. It was a real treat getting to sail with them.

This weekend is the Mills Trophy Race. This being the summer of the Battle of Lake Erie Bi-Centennial, the organizers have decided to make the battle site marker buoy just northeast of West Sister Island a mark of the course. The starting area, 1.5 nm east-southeast of the Toledo Harbor Light, stays the same, and the finish is once again at Put-in-Bay. I thought it was a nice touch to include the Battle of Lake Erie marker buoy as a mark of the course. The planners will hold their annual pre-race party at Toledo Yacht Club on Thursday, June 6. The first starts will be around 5 p.m. on Friday, June 7, on three courses: The President’s Cup Course (just under 40 nm); The Governor’s Cup Course (just under 55 nm) and the Mills Trophy Race Course (just over 70 nm).

The next big event on the sailing calendar is the Sandusky Island Race/Stein Hospice Cup event out of Sandusky Sailing Club. This one is one of my favorites because of the course, a 36 mile figure 8 course that takes the fleet around Kelleys Island, around South Bass Island, Around Middle Bass Island and back to Sandusky. It is a beautiful trip and a fun race, and SSC has entertainment and a great meal on Friday night during registration.

See you out on Lake Erie!
