Its tree time

The Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) 2014 Seedling Tree and Shrub Sale order forms are now available by calling 419-898-1595 or visiting the website,

Evergreen varieties in packets of 10 for this year include Colorado Blue Spruce, Norway Spruce, American Arborvitae and Bald Cypress. This year The Ottawa SWCD will again offer the fast growing Green Rocket Cedar that will be sold individually. These Cedars will grow up to three feet per year, are deer resistant, have a strong root system and no major insect problems. They make a great windbreak or privacy screen.

Other fast growing varieties offered are Autumn Blaze Maple, Cleveland Flowering Pear and Tulip Poplar. Other trees available are London Plane (similar to Sycamore), Red Oak, Canada Red Choke Cherry and Princeton American Elm. Butterfly Bushes are also available for purchase, as are Native Grass packets.  New this year are Wildlife Tree Packs that include ten Native Oak Trees.

The District reminds everyone that the Colorado Blue Spruce, Norway Spruce, Arborvitae, Bald Cypress and Wildlife Tree Packs are only seedlings, with sizes ranging from 8”–18”. The following hardwoods will be between 4’-5’ in size and are sold individually: Canada Red Choke Cherry, Tulip Poplar, Autumn Blaze Maple, Red Oak, Princeton American Elm and Cleveland Flower Pear.  Green Rocket Cedars do very well in our soil and about 2’ in size. All are pre-packed and come complete with planting instructions.

Prices range from $8 to $35. For an order form or further information call the Ottawa SWCD office at 419-898-1595. Early ordering is encouraged because supplies are limited (particularly for the fast growing varieties and Red Oaks).  Deadline for ordering is April 4. Money raised from the program goes to support District Programs throughout the year. To view the different varieties or print out an order form, visit the Ottawa SWCD Facebook page or website.
