A new season is beginning for the Terra State Community College Jazz Band with exciting changes in store for area student and community musicians.
Local music director and instructor Jeff Blanchard is handing off the baton to the band's newest addition, regional musician and educator Kris Burt. A long time educator, Burt has led band and music programs at area schools in the Huron, Sandusky, Bellevue and Norwalk communities.
He received his undergraduate degree in music education at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago and completed additional studies at Bowling Green State University. As a budding musician, he found his love for jazz in the greater Chicago area.
Burt has created jazz programs in area schools including Huron City Schools, Sandusky Central Catholic and South Central Schools in Greenwich. He has enjoyed writing custom arrangements for these groups over the years.
"Sometimes one just can’t find the perfect chart, so out comes the manuscript paper," he said.
During this time, Burt has also been very fortunate to keep a busy schedule playing with several regional jazz combos, in professional and community musical orchestras, even in a British-style brass band. He is thrilled now to be the director of the Terra State Jazz Band.
The Terra State Jazz Band will hold an open house during their first rehearsal on Thursday, Sept. 5, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. All area musicians, students and the public are welcome to come to Terra State's Recital Hall, Building D, Room D122 and check out the band and the college's music facilities. Bring your instrument and join in playing popular big band charts. No experience necessary. Or enjoy listening to the sounds of the band while comfortably sitting in Terra State's new state-of-the-art performance hall.
