Josh Thacker and Shawn Boller
Two Terra State Community College students were honored by the Ohio Association of Community Colleges at a luncheon in the Ohio Statehouse Atrium in Columbus in April.
Shawn Boller, of Mount Gilead, was named to the Academic All-Ohio first team and received a $1,000 scholarship while Josh Thacker, of Tiffin, was tabbed for the third team and received a $250 scholarship.
A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Boller graduated earlier this month with an Associate of Applied Science in Welding. He searched for colleges in Ohio that offered a degree in welding and, although it meant a daily commute of three hours round trip, he chose Terra State for its outstanding welding degree program. During that time, he also worked the night shift at Marion Correctional Institution.
At Terra State, Boller was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, was a Rotary Student of the Month, and eagerly assisted other veterans with difficult assignments. He earned a Certified Welding Inspector from the American Welding Society and voluntarily served as an assistant instructor in the welding lab at Terra State.
Thacker is pursuing an Associate of Science degree. He works full time for a cable company but returned to school after seeing the benefit of having an education. He is committed to academic excellence for himself but also to be a role model for his children.
Thacker is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and assisted his calculus class in raising donations for a charity. He also donates Christmas presents every year to local families in need.
Since 1997, the All-Ohio Academic Team Awards program has provided more than $250,000 in scholarships to hundreds of the top community college students in Ohio, thereby enabling them to realize their educational goals. Phi Theta Kappa International assists in ranking the students.
