On May 20, nearly 380 people wandered the halls of Carroll School reminiscing about days gone by, sharing a laugh or meeting up with some old classmates.
“I never expected this many to come out,” said School Secretary Linda Dick. “It was so nice to see all the familiar faces coming through the doors.”
The school hosted its “A Building of Memories” which was kicked off by Jennie Dornbusch, graduate of the school. Ottawa County Commissioner Jim Sass presented a Proclamation to Principal Judy Peters. Children from the school sang “America the Beautiful” (which was also sung at the 1939 dedication) under the direction of Jackie Seibert. Before traveling the halls, Ashley Auger, accompanied by Bonnie Daniels, sang the Carroll School Alma Mater.
Old class pictures, newsletters dating back to 1927, memory letters sent in by Judge Donald Wargowsky, Robert Moore, Paul Layman, Shirley LaCumsky and Mel Hoover lined the blackboards for people to enjoy. A video of memories also played throughout the day and people also had a chance to “share” some if there own.
At the closing, OHHS Jazz Band entertained attendees. Everyone gathered outside and watched as the Boy Scouts from Troup No. 370 lowered the flag. I’m sure many happy memories were going through their head. Closing comments were shared by Peters and a balloon release ended the wonderful day of celebrating 73 years of memories.
