During the week of June 3 – 6, Bataan Memorial Primary School was transformed into Camp Read-a-lot for students to do “S’More” reading. Students met by the Bataan flagpole each morning for reveille, raising of the flag, roll call, daily joke and the “Golden Dust Pan” award for the cleanest “cabin” (classroom). Teachers were the camp counselors, dressing the part each day and leading the camp themed activities. 

As part of Camp Read-a-lot, various parts of the school were renamed for the week. The bathrooms were latrines, the nurse’s office was the first aid station, and the office was headquarters. Classroom lessons that centered around camping took place and the reading teachers had fun reading sessions. Reading sessions such as reading by flashlight, outdoor games or crafts and camper reading (a camper was parked in back of the school for the week).

Families of students participated by completing activities at home as part of their Family Reading Contract. Families logged activities such as a family hike, checking the newspaper for the weather report, creating a collage of items found in nature, cuddling up and read a good book, or doing a good deed for a family member or neighbor.  Reading teachers Tara Nilson, Julie Dunham and Nancy Wargo coordinated the event. Port Clinton Elementary Parents Club organized the event for Bataan Primary students with carnival games, food, fun, a clown making balloon animals, and face-painting.

Just as the older kids at ICS enjoyed Olympic Day last Friday with the public school at True Lay Stadium, the younger grades at ICS had their turn on Tuesday. ICS gym teacher, Mrs. Joni Hoffman, organized a field day just for the kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders. The kids took turns at several different activities, which included a Frisbee toss, a crab crawl beach volleyball game, an obstacle course, and a bean bag toss competition.

The Immaculate Conception School third graders treated their parents to lunch last week in thanks for everything their parents have done for them. Mrs. Danielle Linja’s class sent out invitations, made gifts, decorated the tables, and prepared an Italian feast of spaghetti, bread, and desserts. The event was held in the school gym. The class spent some time reflecting and writing an essay thanking their parents for their time and guidance.
