GPAAC events

As this year marks an exciting time for Port Clinton and Ottawa County, so to it is for the Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council (GPAAC). With the summer season just around the corner, people will soon be making their way back to our area for the enjoyment brought by Lake Erie, the islands, boating, fishing, camping or otherwise simply the thought of getting away. With all the upcoming events planned around the Battle of Lake Erie bicentennial celebration, we may very well see the greatest influx of tourism in our lifetime.

Port Clinton Citizens: Don’t be a “Grasshole!”

It’s that time of year again.  When lawns grow inches overnight and pent-up homeowners respond furiously with their lawnmowers.  Bless their hearts for keeping our neighborhoods trim and good-looking.

But, as you join this noble troop, please keep in mind that your lawn clippings belong in your lawn – not in our streets.

Every year, inconsiderate people (called “Grassholes”) blow their grass into our streets.  Consequences of their thoughtlessness include:

  • clogging our already-overburdened storm sewers,
  • grass flowing into the Lake, adding to our algae problem,
  • “slippery” pavements for motorcycle and bicycle riders,
  • just plain ugly streets and neighborhoods.

So please, please, don’t be a Grasshole yourself.  And if you see one, gently educate them by giving them two beeps of your car horn (for Grass … Hole.)  Possibly they’re not as inconsiderate as they seem to be.

Yours for cleaner streets,
Jeffrey H. Bryden

PC Fireworks

Yes, I will grant you the fact that with the Easter Bunny scouting out places to hide eggs it does seems a bit strange to be reading a letter that is addressing a holiday that occurs in the middle of the summer.  However, planning for the annual Port Clinton Area 4th of July Celebration is a year-round activity.  Raising the necessary funds to implement the events associated with this annual celebration of our nation’s birth is the primary purpose of those plans and for that matter this letter.
