Outlook: Just three years ago, the Port Clinton Redskins took the area for a special ride when they went 26-1 and advanced to the Division II State Title Game before falling to Dayton Dunbar, 64-50.

The past two seasons, however, have been tough for Port Clinton. Last year, the ‘Skins went 6-14 overall and 6-8 in the SBC and lost in the sectional tournament.

Head coach Troy Diels, now in his eighth season at the helm, is hoping that his team can bounce back this season.

While it must replace leading scorer Alex Greene, Port Clinton does return a number of key players, among them wings Carter Rumball, Kalib Shiets, Jason Mueller, Kyle Wilkins and point guard Brock Moore.

Rounding out the nine-man rotation will be point guard Nathan Stubblefield, wing Dylan Webb and Ian Kyle and Chris Stokes in the post.

“We have nine guys (in our rotation) right now,” Diels said. “I can see any one of those guys starting. With that being said, it’s also a blessing (because) we have nine guys we feel comfortable with.”

Port Clinton, which is used to running to a half-court offense, will likely be a team that features more of an up-and-down tempo in an effort to take advantage of its quickness.

“We are quite a bit different team than what I’ve coached since I’ve been here,” Diels said. “We have some increased quickness on our team so we’re going to try and make that be one of our strengths. We’re going to try and play up to that. We have an overall lack of size.”

“The only thing we’ve talked about as a team thus far is becoming better each day,” he continued. “We don’t want to take any steps backwards. We want to be very conditioned. That’s something that’s important. We’ve been pretty half-court oriented (in the past).

Hopefully our defense will create things for us; we’ll probably be a little more up-tempo. ”

The media and the coaches picked Perkins and Huron to finish first and second, respectively, in the Sandusky Bay Conference this season, exactly where they were last season.

“On paper, Perkins and Huron are pretty talented,” Diels said. “They not only have some outstanding individual players, but they have some depth. Those two teams are the class of the conference. Everybody else is pretty even. There are going to be some pretty good battles in the SBC. I don’t know if anyone (other than Perkins and Huron) will get into the top-two.”

When asked what it will take for his team to be successful this season, Diels was succinct, saying, “We (must) defend and shoot the ball well.”
