Oak Harbor sends four wrestlers to state

Led by district champion Luke Cramer, the Oak Harbor wrestling team is sending four wrestlers to the Division II State Meet after its performance this weekend at the district tournament in Bowling Green.

Cramer, who placed fourth at state at 138 pounds last season, dominated his weight class, winning all four of his matches in convincing fashion. Cramer (38-5) won his first two matches by fall before defeating reigning state champion Chris Moore of Clyde, 6-0, before beating Bryan’s Brock Nagel by technical fall, 17-2, in the finals.

As a team, the Rockets finished sixth with 83.5 points, just behind Wapakoneta (86.0). Clyde was first with 124 points, followed by Central Catholic (113.5) and Perkins (105.5).

Sophomore T.J. Lawrence was second at 285, winning three matches before falling to Benjamin Logan’s Beau Harmon, 3-2, in the finals. Lawrence, who is 31-11 on the season, had a 22-match winning streak heading into the final match.

Senior Jared Chambers, who qualified for state last year, upset top seed Jacob Wright of Franklin in the second round before falling to eventual-champion Seth Williams of Tiffin Columbian in the semifinals, 13-3. Chambers (30-9), however, regrouped and won his next two matches to finish third.

Fellow senior Alec Bowlick, now 34-10 on the season, won one match before falling to eventual champion, Nick Pauff of Elida, 3-2, in the second round before recovering to win four straight matches in the consolation bracket to finish third.

In 2012, the Rockets finished 19th as a team with 26 points behind fourth-place finishes from Cramer and Alex Bergman. This time around, they’ll be looking to improve upon that.
