Behind some clutch hitting and a fine pitching performance by Emma Bergman, Oak Harbor’s softball team defeated St. Mary Central Catholic, 4-2, on Senior Night.
Justine Webb, who was honored along with fellow senior Theresa Stokes, had an RBI double to lead the charge for the Rockets. Chrislyn Stevenson added an RBI triple and Brandy Lochotzki and Olivia Rollins each drove in a run.
Bergman allow two runs (one earned) on four hits in seven innings. She struck out four and did not walk a batter.
Julia Edinger had two hits to lead the Panthers and Dominique Pezz drove in a run. Edinger took the loss in the circle, allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits in six innings. She struck out one batter and walked two.
Oak Harbor scored two runs in each of the first two innings to grab a 4-0 lead before SMCC scored one run apiece in the fifth and sixth.
Webb and Stokes, the team's lone seniors, have been instrumental in turning around the program. Last season, the club improved from 9-19 to 19-9 and the Rockets are currently 14-7 overall and 4-5 in the Sandusky Bay Conference this season, a clear sign that the young team is in good shape.
Oak Harbor 4, Margaretta 2
Oak Harbor rallied from an early deficit and defeated Margaretta, 4-2, to notch a win in Sandusky Bay Conference action.
The Polar Bears got two runs in the top of the first before the Rockets answered with two in the second to tie the score. Oak Harbor took the lead for good with a run in the third before a key defensive play helped them to maintain the lead. That play came in the top of the fifth when Margaretta, trailing 3-2, got its first two batters to reach, putting the tying run at first base. Prepared to lay down a bunt, the Polar Bear hitter popped the pitch into the air, only to have it caught by Webb, the third baseman, who doubled off the runner at first to kill the threat. Margaretta never threatened after that.
Webb led the Rockets, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and two RBIs. Theresa Stokes finished with two hits and a run, Brandy Lochotzki had an RBI and Maddy Rathbun, Emma Bergman and Kimmi Wahlers all scored a run.
Jess Hamm led the Polar Bears with three hits and an RBI and Macy Michel had two hits and scored a run.
Bergman allowed two unearned runs on nine hits in seven innings of work. She struck out six and did not walk a batter.
