Relay for Life: Stories of Hope

This year, the Ottawa County Relay for Life had a special guest leading the parade at the opening ceremony held Friday, June 20, at 6 p.m. Tess Siefke, a sixth grader at the Oak Harbor Middle School, who was stricken with leukemia, wore her superhero cape around the track. This is just one story of many in a county where everyone understands the ups and downs of cancer.

The Relay for Life is a way for survivors, sufferers, family members and friends to come together and raise money to help ease the battles associated with cancer. As of Friday night, the Ottawa County Relay for Life had raised $48,000. The money raised goes towards local programs, such as Look Better, Feel Better and the Wig Bank, but mostly goes towards cancer research. All of the money raised stays within the general area.

Relay for Life of Ottawa County June 20-21

Cancer has touched everyone’s lives in some way or another being it personal, a family or a friend. We have seen first-hand how something so terrible can bring so many people together with love and compassion. The American Cancer Society benefits from the Relay for Life events that are held all over the country. The event is a place where survivors can come together, family members can heal together and family and friends can donate to help another cancer patient’s journey easier.

The Ottawa County Relay for Life will take place June 20-21 at the Oak Harbor High School starting at 6 p.m. Friday. The event will go to 12 p.m., noon, on Saturday. This year’s theme for the relay is Stories of Hope. As of Tuesday, 19 teams and 117 participants have already raised $43,500.90.

The family friendly event will include a reception for all cancer survivors, a luminaria ceremony at 10 p.m., games and activities for children, a DJ and bands, food, contests, raffles and prizes.

All are welcome to attend the event. To donate visit relayforlife.org/ottawaco with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.
