Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge closed

Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge is closed as current funding expired on October 1. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is aware that any lapse in appropriations imposes hardships on those we serve. However, due to this lapse in appropriations this facility is closed to the public and all public activities are cancelled. 

Only limited functions will continue, such as those necessary to respond to emergencies, perform essential functions and to protect human life or personal property.

Ohio Business College Honors List for Summer Quarter 2013

Ohio Business College announces its Honors List for Summer Quarter 2013. Students completing less than twelve credit hours, earning 3.25 GPA and above received a Certificate of Merit. Students completing twelve credit hours and receiving a GPA of 3.25- 3.75 were recognized on the Dean’s List. Students completing twelve credit hours and receiving a GPA greater than 3.76 were recognized on the President’s List.

Leadership Ottawa County Class explores natural resources, local government

Connie Moore of Moore Beef and Hay Farm waves as a crop-duster flies over the Leadership of Ottawa County hayride in September.

Leadership Ottawa County (LOC) will meet with government officials at the Ottawa County Courthouse in Port Clinton Oct. 9 to learn more about the county’s government structure and demographics.

LOC is a nine-month leadership development program that brings young professionals together the second Wednesday of each month to learn about and explore the diversity of Ottawa County and increase personal leadership skills through experiential training.

Healing Lake Erie: Cover crops for farms and home gardens

The last of the tomatoes have been harvested from home gardens, the pumpkins and squash are nearly done and fall garden clean-up has begun. It is time for composting garden waste or hauling it to a community garden waste and leaf collection site. Bare soil sits exposed to the elements for most of the late fall, winter and early spring across Ottawa County, subject to the same erosion and run-off that commercial farmers combat.

Grand re-opening for McDonald’s, Oak Harbor

McDonald’s announces their grand re-opening at 122 E. Water Street in downtown Oak Harbor. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 9 a.m. McDonald’s is owned by Thomas Humbard and he also has locations in Port Clinton, Catawba, Fremont, Clyde, Bellevue, and Tiffin. The store is managed by Erin Baker and supervised by Kyle Snyder. They are currently open 5 a.m-11 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 5 a.m.-12 a.m. Friday-Saturday. You can reach them at 419-898-4724.

Girl Scouts Pack a Pick-up

Girl Scout Cadets, Daisies, Juniors and Brownies all worked together to Pack A Pick-up at the Harvest Festival in Port Clinton last weekend. The girls collected non-perishable food and personal care items to donate to the Ottawa County community food banks. By Saturday afternoon the Girl Scouts were half way to their goal of filling the pick-up. They had also raised $115 in cash donations. The Girl Scouts and their troop leaders were thankful that Harvest Festival goers were so generous.

Lake Erie is a powerful inspiration for artists and those doing some exceptional work are represented by Desdemona’s Art Gallery in Marblehead.“We often hear new customers exclaim,‘You have such beautiful things!’,” said Laura Brown Egan, who co-owns the gallery with her daughter, Bailey VanKirk. The artists, who excel as oil painters, opened the gallery16 months ago with a dozen local artists.
