Toast of Ohio

Patrons at the ninth annual Toast of Ohio wine festival can enjoy sampling wines from ten Ohio wineries, paired with gourmet food and entertainment, Aug. 9-10. The event kicks off Friday night with a wine tasting event at the Sandusky Greenhouse, 5:30-8 p.m. Saturday’s event is on the shores of Lake Erie at the Sandusky Bay Pavilion from 12-8 p.m. Call 800.255.3743 for more information.

ILYA Senior Regatta at Put-in-Bay

The next big sailing event is this weekend, Thursday through Sunday, the Inter-Lake Yachting Association’s Senior Regatta at Put-in-Bay. Well over 100 yachts and crews will descend on the Island during the Deep Water Races that will take place today (Thursday, Aug. 1). First up is the Cleveland Deep Water Race on Wednesday evening, July 31. That will be followed by Deep Water Races coming to South Bass Island from Detroit, Toledo, Port Clinton and Sandusky. The actual regatta takes place next Friday through Sunday, Aug. 2-4. The courses will be a combination of “Around the Islands” racing as well as a day of short course racing. There will be many social activities for the sailors as well. Pretty much all of the social activities will take place at Put-in-Bay Yacht Club, which will be a busy place. We will see you there!

PCACC Golf Outing at CIC Sept. 10

The public is welcome to attend the Port Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Golf Outing scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the Catawba Island Club.

The entry fee is $100 per person, which includes 18 holes of golf, donuts and coffee at registration, club golf cart, a buffet lunch immediately following the outing and a golf souvenir.  Other activities include Mulligans, skins, skills contest and a poker run.

The format is a 4 person scramble.  Check-in is at 7:30 a.m. with a shot gun start at 8:30 a.m.  This event is on a first come first served basis and spots are filling up fast.  Registration forms are available by calling the Chamber at 419-734-5503 or by going to www.portclintonchamber.com.

Lakeside Federation of Women’s Clubs holds final convention

The 119th Convention of the Lakeside Federation of Women’s Clubs was held July 10 at the Green Gables Lakeside Women’s Club in Lakeside. President Joyce Keaton of Attica chose “Friends and Memories” as the theme for this convention, a very appropriate topic since was the last meeting for this organization.

In 1894 women’s clubs were thriving and much needed as a means for learning and sharing, Now, many women are working and not having time or even feeling the need for women’s clubs as they once did. It was the last conference, but memories will remain and friendships made will be cherished forever.

John Boehner at Liberty Aviation Museum

Speaker of the US House of Representastives John Boehner stopped in to the Tin Goose Diner and Liberty Aviation Museum early Sunday morning and visited with the flight crew of “Georgie’s Gal” prior to her departure to Air Venture 2013 in Oshkosh, WI.

“Georgie’s Gal” is the finest restored and operational B-25 still flying, and is based locally here at the Liberty Aviation Museum.

How to save money and make a crawler harness at home

A popular bait to troll with on Lake Erie from late spring to early fall is the crawler harness. You’ll pay upwards of $3-$5for some pre-tied crawler harnesses in the local sporting good stores and bait shops, but you can make them yourself for pennies on the dollar right in your own home. All that is needed are some beads, hooks, line, clevises, and little baggies. I’m going to share with you how I build my harnesses, so you can easily build them too.

All Classics Festival to be held in Huron

The Lyman Boat Owners Association (LBOA) will host the 14th Annual All Classics Festival on August 17 at the Huron Boat Basin.  Owners and enthusiasts of antique and classic boats of all makes and models and antique cars of all makes and models are encouraged to participate in the event or attend as spectators.
