Artists Club names scholarship winners

The Port Clinton Artist’s Club has donated $600 in art scholarships in 2012.
Ilene Hamilton, from Terra State Community College, received $300 and is a second-year student. She won Best of Show in the school’s recent art show.
Port Clinton High School students from art teacher Cheryl Knapp’s classes have also been chosen for scholarships. First place of $100 went to Katrina Lindsley; second place, $75, went to Taylor Gray; third, $50, went to Kayleigh Householder; and three prizes for honorable mention, $25 each, went to Eryn Binder, Teri Metcalf and Cameron Albright.

Joyful Connections seeking teams to play ‘Family Frenzy’

Joyful Connections will be hosting its signature event, Family Frenzy, on Saturday, Sept. 29, in the Banquet Hall at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds. Family Frenzy will be played in a similar fashion to the game show “Family Feud.” 
Joyful Connections is seeking six teams of five players to compete in this fun-filled event. The questions are designed to raise a laugh from the audience, so teams must be prepared to have some fun. Answers for the questions are based on what “the survey says.” A prize will be awarded to the winning team along with bragging rights for next year’s event.
The team registration fee is $125 and includes a chicken barbecue and rib dinner and soft drinks for all five team members. A cash bar will be available.

Summer Earth Camps a big success

The OSS Joint Solid Waste Management District sponsored the sixth annual “Earth Camp” in Ottawa, Sandusky and Seneca counties during the month of June. More than 180 students entering grades 1-6 in the three-county district attended the one-day camp that offered fun activities on recycling topics and lessons on the importance of our natural resources. Camps were held on different days at Lakeview Park in Port Clinton, Conner Park in Fremont and Meadowbrook Park in Bascom.
Campers were separated into three groups: Planet Protectors, Go Green Gang and Recycling Rock Stars and each group rotated through stations. Team flags were made and carried with pride to each session during the camp.

Appetite for the Arts to be held in new aviation jewel

The Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council will celebrate the annual “Appetite for the Arts” Aug. 17-19 at the new Liberty Aviation Museum located at the Erie-Ottawa Regional Airport.
Friday evening will be a ticketed reception that will give art lovers a sneak preview of art, antique cars and aircraft. As guests stroll through the aisles viewing the art and speaking with the artists, they will taste the culinary delights of area vendors.

Duck Drop, Chemo Crawl coming up

Going to the island or need a day at Monsoon Lagoon to cool off? Then support the American Cancer Society by purchasing a duck for the second annual Duck Drop to be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 18 at Monsoon Lagoon.  Your $10 duck purchase will give you a choice of a one-day Waterpark Pass to Monsoon Lagoon or a Round Trip Ferry Ticket to Put-in-Bay on the Miller Boat Line. All ducks will be dropped into the lazy river at Monsoon Lagoon and the first to finish wins the grand prize of $700. Second is $500 and third will be $300 worth of local gift certificates.  Last year it took 4 minutes for the ducks to race around the lazy river.

Local to compete for national crown

Nicole Lyle, Port Clinton’s Ohio Royal American Elegant Miss beauty title-holder, is headed to Mobile, Ala., to compete for the national national title of American Royal Miss. Three local sponsors are helping Lyle make the trip July 19-22, they are: Great Lakes Popcorn, Perfect Color Hair & Tan and the Knights of Columbus.
Lyle is the daughter of the Robin and Chet Wisenbarger of Port Clinton and is active in the Walleye Drop and the Eucharist ministry at Immaculate Conception Church.

Safety Council holds summer picnic

The Ottawa County Safety Council will meet Wednesday, July 18, at Crosswinds Restaurant, 280 SE Catawba Road, Port Clinton. The “Summer Picnic” begins at 11 a.m. with lunch and networking with the meeting and presentation set to run from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The speaker is Jeff Hutchins, BWC Industrial Hygienist/Technical Advisor. The topic is Heat Stress-Prevention and Procedures.

Fishing derby planned during fair

The Oak Harbor FFA Chapter will play host to the annual fishing derby during Sunday, July 22, during the Ottawa County Fair. All kids ages 12 and under are invited. The event will take place at the race track infield pond and will begin promptly at scheduled times: the 0-5 age group will begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by the 6-12 age group starting at 11 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to the boys and girls of each class for the most fish caught (ties broken by total weight of the catch), largest fish caught (by weight) or smallest fish caught (by weight). There is also a guaranteed prize for every contestant that registers before July 18.
