Extra patrols throughout holiday weekend

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office will have extra patrols throughout the upcoming Fourth of July holiday.  Six overtime shifts will be scheduled over the weekend in an attempt to promote safety among drivers, as well as draw awareness to the other traffic on the roadways.

The Deputies assigned to the overtime duties will work varying hours those shifts.  The Deputies will enforce all traffic laws, with emphasis on impaired drivers, speed and seat belt violations.

This overtime is part of a grant received by The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office from the Governor’s Highways Safety Office.

Fireworks in Ohio

I once again write to suggest that the time has come to consider legislation in Ohio to allow for the sale and use of the full line of consumer fireworks.

Consumer fireworks are safer today than they have ever been in the history of our country.  John Adams, in a prophetic 1776 letter to his wife Abigail, suggested that the Independence Day holiday “ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, bonfires and illuminations (fireworks) from one end of this continent to the other, from this day forward forevermore.”

Marblehead Summerfest sizzles through its third year

St. Joseph’s Marblehead choir, volunteers from the parish and community, locals and visitors worked together to have another successful year at the Marblehead Summerfest. Friday night was very busy at the festival, but heat played a factor during the day on Saturday.

Bluegrass Jam rocks the hangar

The 3rd annual Bluegrass Jam took place in the Liberty Aviation Museum hangar on Saturday, June 28, from 6-11 p.m. It is the third year for the Jam, but it’s the first year it was held in the museum hangar. The Bluegrass Jam bands were the Ottawa County Bluegrass Band and Willow Creek Band.

Erie-Ottawa Regional Airport Authority Director Stan Gebhardt said that last year there were 335 people that attended the event and he expected the number of people there met or exceeded last year’s numbers.

“We have a great group of volunteers that help with this event,” said Gebhardt. “That’s what makes everything run smooth and efficient.”

All of the money raised at the event goes towards aviation: the Tri-Motor Heritage Foundation and the Liberty Aviation Museum. For more information about these organizations visit and
