| 'Helping hands' shop for toys for Christmas |
The Marines were in town Friday to help shop for local kids. Five members of Weapons Co. 124 out of Perrsyburg joined Maureen Saponari of the Salvation Army on a shopping spree for toys for the collaborative Ottawa County Helping Hand Toy Drive. These agencies have partnered with other community groups to make sure that each child in Ottawa County receives a gift under their tree this holiday season. Volunteers separate the toys and other gifts — makeup, slippers and such — into age and gender groups. Then, during the toy handout Dec. 16, qualified parents can come and pick two gifts for each child in their family. Applications are being accepted for the program through Dec. 1. To apply, call Saponari at 419-732-2769 or pick up an application at the Sutton Center or Job and Family Services Office. Because of this collaboration, last year nearly 4,000 toys were distributed to children in Ottawa County. This year organizers anticipate serving 1,900 children countywide. The toy collection boxes are out in local stores, churches, banks and businesses through Dec. 14. All toys collected will stay in Ottawa County and serve local residents in need. Drop off new unwrapped toy donation at: Huntington Bank — Catawba and Port Clinton; Key Bank; National City Bank; Bassett’s; Wood Forest Bank; Firelands Presbyterian Church; Curves — Port Clinton and Oak Harbor; Krogers; Community Market — Port Clinton and Oak Harbor; Trinity United Methodist Church — Port Clinton; ODOT; Crosswinds Restaurant; Ottawa Department of DD; Lagoon Saloon; Lakeside Church; AAA, Mallory & Co.; Harbor Lanes; Peace Lutheran Church; Slaters; or Nor’Easter Club. If you would like to make a donation, call The Salvation Army at 419-732-ARMY (2769) and speak with Maureen Saponari.
