The U.S. Brig Niagara returns to Put-in-Bay Wednesday, Aug. 19, for the celebration of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s birthday Aug. 23. A community potluck will be held Wednesday at the Crescent Tavern Pavilion to welcome Niagara and her 36-member crew. The Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce will be supplying hot dogs and hamburgers and attendees are asked to bring a dish to pass. Event sponsor Pepsi will supply beverages.
Thursday, teachers from Lucas, Huron, Erie, Ottawa, Lorain and Cuyahoga counties will set sail as part of an interdisciplinary project for students. The program — free and offered on a first-come basis — is part of an effort to develop a curriculum for eighth graders. Doraine Toms, program coordinator, is working with Capt. Wes Harrison of the Niagara and Blanca Alvarez Stransky, monument superintendent, to get the program under way. Friday and Saturday the Niagara will be open for tours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with sails planned from 3 to 8 p.m. Tours are $8 for adults and $4 for kids 6-11; sails are $100. Those who bring five crushed Pepsi cans can get $25 off. “She’s fun to see but she’s even more fun to sail on,” said Maggie Beckford, executive director of the Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce. She said sailors on board the vessel will get the real crew experience, including a meal on board — usually chili or some type of stew. Sunday’s schedule for Niagara will likely include more tours concluding with a Put-in-Bay Chamber fundraiser that evening. The crew will be on hand, and, according to Maggie: “it gives them a break before they have to sail out. It’s amazing how hard these guys work.” Sponsor of the Niagara’s visit include Pepsi, Miller Boat Line, Island Transportation and the chamber. The ship will be docked at Fox's Dock, downtown Put-in-Bay, next to the Jet Express. Call the Put-in-Bay Chamber of commerce and Visitor’ Bureau at 419-285-2832 or 419-285-2213 to book a sail or visit www.visitputinbay.com for information.
